On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Home again home again, jigidy jig

It is official - we are back at Spaudling and settled into our new digs. Caleb is resting and looks better that I have seen him in a long time..Kai Max and I bought 3 cakes from the whole food store for Ellison 12 and walked away after a tearful goodbye- these folks become your family and I will miss their attention, expertise, and their no-fault encouragement plan. Now - for the bad news- mumsie has a full blown case of the hives! The only thing that suprises me about this is why it took till now!
Now I am red from head to toe.
I am looking forward to the guest appearances from those people who got back to me and I will contact you new posters soon to set you up with a password..Those of you who don't know thee Wellfleet characters are in for a big suprise!1!! If there are important updates on those days, I will update in the comment area, so mumsie will still be reporting.
Caleb today- up walking with the help of PT already - eager to do his best, eating still and uses utensils when he is fully alert.Color is great and vitals good-- does it get any better??? Now all that is lacking is a handsome hands on Doctor who can cure hives! Love ya, mumsie

Oooooohhh, you FOX, you!!! :) Looking for a cute DOCTOR, huh??? Hahahaha, well after all you've been through, you deserve to find one!!! But, you may want to think of meeting one in the halls of Spauding rather meeting one that is curing your hives...Hehehe...I get those randomly all the time, and let me tell you...HIVES AREN'T SEXY!!! lol ;)

Super Ecstatic that Caleb has been moved to Spaulding, is eating well, moving well....IS WELL!!!

Oh, and if you need to get ahold of my Judi, please feel free to email at minerhouse@verizon.net

Dear Sharyn & Caleb,

Congrats on all things great and small. Up walking, yahoo, still eating- excellent! Color good, vitals good, joy of joys!

Sharyn, get yourself a good dose of benadryl and the hives will take care of themselves.

Had a thought about something...saw an interview with Bob Woodward the news anchorman who suffered a severe brain injury in Iraq and was hospitalized for over a year and in the interview he and his wife were discussing how difficult it was for him to regain his words, that lots of times the wrong word popped out in the beginning. They began showing him flash cards with pictures on them to help him associate the word to the thing and said that it helped a lot. His 3 little girls, 5 yr old twins and 8 yr old pretty much taught him to speak again. It was pretty amazing seeing the video of it. Like I said, just a thought, but maybe something like this could be helpful to Caleb and could become an activity that takes up part of your days...

With gratitude for Caleb's continued progress-
Audrey

Mumsie,
Stress and or allergies can cause hives. I had a bad case of hives that came and went for over a year. Finally found out that I was allergic to mold. I made appropriate changes (new mattress/boxspring in beach cottage, hypoallergenic sheets, new vaccum cleaner etc.) and the hives went away. Hopefully, yours will dissipate once you feel comfortable with Caleb's move to Spaulding.

P.S. Bob Woodward is back to work full time and leading an amazing life once again. Traveling the world and doing a lot of good work particularly on brain trauma. You may want to read his book for inspiration...

Its just amazing that this time last week we were all say with baited breath, unable to sleep due to Calebs blood count. Now he is up and walking, well its just fantastic. Hope you settle in well and Caleb (and you) continue to make progress! Always checking in...Ali Manchester UK

So glad Caleb is on to Spaulding. Hope that signals a one-way direction toward a positive outcome from now on. Both Danny and I have been keeping up with the blog for news of Caleb...god, what an emotional and physical seesaw ride. No wonder you've developed hives.....just from the stress. I celebrated my birthday and we toasted to Caleb's health by the pond on the morning that we usually see you ride by and wish me a happy birthday...missed you. Reading the blog, I constantly keep my fingers crossed for a good recovery....now you're another casualty of this situation....so, the fingers are cossed for your health too. All of you are in our thoughts.

amazing! this is great news for Caleb. Hope your hives go away soon! Robin & Priscilla

Mumsie, Sounds like our Mother Nature is calling you to get some rest now! You have to be exhausted at some level to hang on for the ride you've just been on. That is great news on Caleb, the best! Okay, Mumsie, try to rest a little now. Take care, Andrea

audrey dates all us "mumsie" aged bloggers with her woodward/woodruff mix-up... great story he has though - inspirational for good outcomes. Yes, the benadryl will probably reduce the hives and itch if it's there, but you will probably do best taking it at night as it makes me go to sleep! Alas, you probably know all of this already..but just in case...Besides the good-will of this planet, Caleb has the strength of his age, so I'm betting he blows the socks off the PT's... what a challenge for them and for all of you - it can only go up- just stay vigilant about the infection precautions - as if you weren't already hyper-vigilant about everything! Being in crisis can help us be so totally present and in the now - a place we should all strive for anyway, but without the stress! Hang in Mumsie and take another bath!!

dear sharyn and caleb,

i was at the cape with my son visiting in eastham around the second week of july, when we went to wellfleet to have lunch at the bookstore ...we saw these signs all around town, pray for caleb. and i noticed an extrodinary amount of jolly roger flags around town.
after i got home to CT i looked up caleb on the web and saw the blog. i have been reading it daily since that day.
i check it first thing in the morning at work and on the weekends i make sure i check again.
i dont know why it has taken me this long to write.....
reading of your love and devotion to your son enthralls me. i do not know caleb or anyone on this blog, but this story of his adventures at mass general have given me wings that i did not have before. the video of the paddle out made me cry, knowing that i too, a stranger, want this young man i have never met to get well and come back home.
my preist at my church always says PUSH.... Pray Unitl Something Happens. this is a great testimony to that acronym.
i KNOW caleb is getting better because of the prayers and thoughts of all the people who read this blog.
please know that i pray for each and every one of you, every day. and i look forward to next year when i come to the cape again, and i try to find at least one of you all to give you a hug and say i am honored to have met you thru this big green page on the web.
take care
peace

Sharyn,
when you relax in the bath, add some cornstarch or epsom salts - it really takes the itch away and soothes the hives...

Hi Sharyn. Very weird and random...when I read the post today...perhaps only a coincidence. I have hives wicked bad right now too. But worse is: I have had em since Tuesday...and they are like, coming and going. I went to doc Wed, got strong benadryl...woke up yestermorn and was so inflamed it was crazy. So, I went 2 hospital since it had been 3 days and was getting worse; covered head to toe, swolen hands and feet. Got a few shots, and an iv. They went away in half hour. Today, I wake up, nothing, and hour later here they are. I feel you! Anyhow, hope you are having a good day besides that, you sound well. Is there an address to send a little somethin' I picked up? Glad to hear Caleb is doing better:) Miracles happen every day. Hope ur hives go away faster than mine...I feel like I'm living with them forever. ps I think theres a high mold count or something...Take care-
Corey

Sharyn,

The light is getting brighter at the end of the tunnel! Caleb will do it if I know him. Eating is a great sign as well as all the others!

Sorry to hear your face is getting brighter too! Have you had too many champagne deliveries?? I think benadryl is the answer.

Lol, Corey.....If you read this, I wish you well with the hives!!! I remember when I was pregnant with Marli I think, I had to go over to Sharyn's house to get a natural medical remedy book(I think I'm allergic to Benedryl) to find a way to clear them up. And I, like you, felt like they were going to never go away. They are just so damn itchy and irratating. I sympathize! Try some oatmeal in a bath...Like a whole bunch of raw oatmeal(gound-up if you can). Aveno makes pouches of it if it's not accessable any other way.

Well, anyway....Good luck with that! :P

Feeling so happy that Caleb is progressing and that this journey is taking a positive turn...and so sorry about the hives, all that stress just oozing out the pores. I agree about the oatmeal bath; I think it could really help. And a weleda remedy, I wish I could remember the name, but I'm sure you know all the natural remedies. It's supposed to be beautiful out tomorrow. I hope you can take some time for you now that your boy is showing his full resilience. Enjoy your day "off."

Audrey- if you are suggesting that I have more kids in order to teach Caleb to talk-it's not happenin! I spoke to Bob Woodruff's friend/co-worker. They had heard about Caleb through a mutual friend..Bob's story is inspirational and so helpful to us.

Sharyn, I am so sorry you have hives. I too suffer with hives, especially during very stressful situations. If the Benadryl or all of those other good suggestions don't work a doctor can give you a shot of Epinephrine and some prednisone pills (also done for bad cases of poison ivy) and they will clear up pretty quickly. Also check with a doc but you can take more of the Benadryl than it says to on the box, or so mine told me. It is sooo good to hear the steady stream of good news about Caleb. love, Susanna

Dear Sharyn,

Sooooooooooooooooooo nice to have Caleb "On the Road Again" !!!! Sorry about your hives BUT time to slow down. It's esy to see where Caleb has gotten his strength-------those hives should have shown up ages ago!!!! Still in my prayers each day for improvement. Margie

Walking! Great news and amazing what change will come in one week.

Hives are the pits but the body has to release that stress somehow. :) Good thing you are taking a break.

Hello Caleb - Glad to hear you are up and about - all of a sudden those hallways will seem to short....Sharyn, hives are no fun, maybe from some food that didn't like you, but the benadryl is 'over the counter' and helps you sleep, too. Love and hugs to all the family. Natale & Peter

Hi Caleb,

I went by Mass General today and was at the light at the corner by the Museum of Science. You can see the Spaulding from that viewpoint. Anyways, as I waited for the light, I had a straight path to send good, healing vibes to you. I hope you all felt them.

Oh, I also let out a little " aaarrgghh" for you.

Good work Caleb! Yah!! Sharyn, they go away.. try nice warm baths with oatmeal!! I am so happy to hear of the move.. this means good to happen. Chema says hi. Love you.. Clance

Mumsie, better get those hives looked at asap! We wouldn't want Caleb to be in jeopardy! His health is all that matters!

Hives, huh? Well after you take the benedryl, pregnasone, aveeno oatmeal bath, witch hazel, ephedrine, and whatever other suggestion comes your way......I say embrace those hives.....it's a sure sign Caleb is getting well enough that you are able to finally let go a little.... and your body is letting out the last couple of months of built up adreneline toxins from all you've been through.......the road to recovery is up hill from now on!!! Went out on the boat yesterday to billingsgate....glorious day.....but as I arrive back in the harbor, with my American flag on one side of the boat and the pirate flag on the other, I always get a little chuckle....wondering what a maritime visitor to this town must think when they arrive in the harbor and not only see so many pirate flags on individual boats....but a huge one flying from the harbor masters flag pole as well!!!!!

looking forward to my guest appearance on the blog.......am I allowed to share all your "secrets"!!!!

So glad Caleb is moving forward.....I can clearly invision the day he returns home.....Jodi

Hi Sharyn! Just getting our wireless connection at home so now I will be able to keep up more. I miss being in the middle of it all at the market where I could get the morning news on you guys. Such great news that Caleb's back at Spaulding. You all are incredible inspirations to so many.
Got your note. Let me know when you want that Bloody Mary. Easily arranged-also giggles. We'll just make the time for that. By the way I have an e-mail address at the school you can use any time. It is; dhyer@sturgischarterschool.com
Oh yeah,if anyone could look ravishing in HIVES it would be you.
And, depending on the color of your nails of course, the scratching might attract some interesting looks and inquiries. Go for broke, honey.
Love and "Hive-anna Nights Red" kisses,
-Denise
