On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

About the Lawn...

Lisa Brown was the one to take out the permit for gathering on the Wellfleet Town Lawn and therefore holds the official responsibility for our activities there. She has now been asked by "some of the powers that be in Town Hall and elsewhere", to please consider moving the stuff off the lawn.

Oysterfest is on it's way and the town would like to spruce up the lawn in Wellfleet Center. One suggestion is to perhaps move Caleb's things onto Cannon Hill. An additional idea was to put in the circle's place a sign thanking the town and all of the people who have supported, contributed, donated, loved, arrgh-ed etc!

Please ADD YOUR FEEDBACK to this post or find Lisa and speak to her in person about this matter.

We need to make a decision about this soon and there's no doubt that the best possible solution lies in us. LET'S BRAINSTORM!

What would Caleb like to do? Where would he want his things?

First off- It's International Talk Like A Pirate Day. So...
Avast Maties!

I just needed to get that off my very proverbial chest.

That being said, can we move everything to the box that surrounds the cannon? (Did I spell that right? How many n's are there in cannon, anyway?) It IS OYSTERFEST and Caleb is an OYSTERMAN, is he not?

I like the idea of a sign, but want to see all of caleb's special treasures placed somewhere fitting for us all to to visit, and for him to visit sometime.

A local builder has offered to surround the present location with a snow fence for Oysterfest. That seems like a good idea. I'd be happy to put Lisa in touch with him. Jack Smith

not to offend any of the "powers that be" at town hall, but really... just to spruce up the grass?? Everyone's presence there for Caleb during prayer circles should have spoken to their hearts and I think all the treasures should just stay put!!!!

It is fall and the grass is soon to turn brown, the town can spruce it up next year!!!
MoonMolly3 said it best, It is OYSTERFEST and Caleb is an OYSTERMAN!!!!!!
Caleb, Sharyn, Jan, Max, Kai, friends & people from far and wide have brought more peace, love, light & community into Fleet in 3 1/2 months than the Chamber will ever accomplish..
As for the "permit" that was pulled, I say rip it up, it is only a little piece of paper.. Nothing compared to the grand scheme of things..

Sorry again if I have offended anyone but, It IS International Talk Like A Pirate Day!!!!
peace & yaaaaaaaaaarrrgh.

O, Aaaaarrrghh! The pier is under construction so I am not sure that is a good choice. Cannon Hill isn't accessable to everyone and Caleb already has a great flag there. I think maybe everyone could take a piece home to create their own Caleb spot ( maybe the piece they brought) and a great sign (possibly mentioning the blog?) would be good for Oysterfest. I don't know where the prayer circle should meet but I agree it is going to get cold soon.

Anonymous said...

Spruce up the grass? What a pitiful reason to move the circle, created for a local Oysterman! As someone already said the grass is going to die soon anyway. It might take them a few hours to resod it next summer, and give the folks some work.

Besides the tourists love it. It will be another feature of the Oysterfest. People can join in the prayers for Caleb, feel like part of the community, and contribute to shellfishing in Wellfleet.

A snow fence sounds good to protect things. Valuables might want to be removed.

speaking from a tourist's point of view - I think Caleb's tribute/altar makes Wellfleet even more beautiful than any artist has ever conveyed. I've been coming to Wellfleet for 20 years and dearly love it there but this summer, seeing the community gather on that lawn and hearing the love for Caleb and his family and feeling the spirit of deep comradery was beyoond anything I have ever experienced. I will never forget it and I appeal to "the powers that be" that the tribute to Caleb remain right there in the center of town. The heart. Cut grass and trimmed hedges will not due at this time. Let the world see (and I've heard Oysterfest brings the masses) what your town has done and how they have come together for one of it's own. We should all learn from your example. Let it be.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the prayer circle efforts over the past 11 weeks! There has been talk of moving its location for about a month and I've been giving it a lot of thought as well. There has been some great ideas mentioned, but they all lack the security and community that the prayer circle deserves and needs. The town lawn was selected to be the location for its central location and its open area. Prayer circles have dwindles down to a few, sometimes more people and usually just at night. Its current location also allows people to come ANY time during the day: for their morning coffee, lunch break, on their way home, or after the bars let out. Thank you Lisa for offering your house for a weekly circle; we need it to remain a place for all the people in the comunity. Cannon hill is NOT a good idea, since the pirate flag raised there disappeared within days and its not in the public eye. Nobody "passes by" Uncle Tims everyday. In front of the Preservation Hall between the cherry and spruce trees has also been a great idea. And Moe and Yvonne have offered a spot at Abiyoyo if the "town" doesn't want it on town property. Fortunately, WE ARE THE TOWN!!! There has never been a better use for town property than to gather with peaceful thoughts for our Captain. I must say, as a pirate, I had no plans of getting these prayer circles "legalized" so I thank Lisa for being the one to get the permit. However I feel badly that she has to be the one who is hearing the compaints. I believe the selectmen and DPW would be okay with moving the tresures left for Caleb up around the Cannon, clearly being the shortest move and one with all the same qualities. If anyone would like any furture info or has ideas, PLEASE call the Caleb Potter Prayer Circle Phone (yes, the prayer circle DOES have its own phone) at (508)246-6247. We still have 3&1/2 weeks before Oysterfest and it would be great to have a "moving party" sometime within the next two weeks.
Many Thanks & Blessings~ Prayer Circle Organizer xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

I feel we need to put the circle somewhere where all the 40,000 people who will attend the Oysterfest will see the circle and ask "what and who" then DONATE some money.

And all the more people who learn about Caleb sending the positive energy AND MONEY.

How bout' putting the circle in the lot next to the Preservation Hall where the candy store used to be. There must be a corner where it could live. Let's not put it out of the way. . . let's use this opportunity to spread the love and the word people!!!!!!

I agree that there is no better symbol for oysterfest , than space, sharing info and ability to give...in any form to Caleb. The altar could be moved to the cannon spot. Maybe put some things over/under by the tree everyone loves. I think weekly indoor prayer circles are a great idea. ann m.

Although I am not there in Wellfleet, each time I pray for Caleb, it is sent to him in his room, & on the Town Lawn with my dearest of friends at the circles. I feel like it is best to keep it just where it is, sprucing up the lawn is easy to do AROUND the alter. I also agree with Settie, when people come for the Oyster Fest they will ask about Leb, and quite possibly donate.. there could even be some trust worthy people to collect at his spot! Maybe just try to build a little cave around it to protect it a bit from the weather, and masses of people parading about. Also, there are some elders that I am sure would have difficulty getting to Canyon Hill. Anyway, love to ALL you there in Wellfleet, and ALL those who care for Caleb enough to pray and stay connected through this blog.

Speaking as a another tourist- please don't spruce up the lawn on our behalf! (I can only assume a desire to spruce up the lawn simultaneous to the Oysterfest is to somehow appeal to the out of towners.) Please don't do that. The thing us out of towners like about your town is that it is an actual town- with real, beautiful people living there that allow us to share your space for a week or two (or longer if we are lucky) each year. If I want to go somewhere with a tidy lawn I will go to Disneyland etc.

I know the locals probably don't feel like fighting about such a thing given the circumstances but it would be a shame to let some shortsighted people who care only about healthy grass dismantle or even sideline your lovely altar. It SHOULD be front and center as a physical representation of your town's spirit.

Sorry, I can't speak pirate very well so I had to write in English

wow..thanks everyone so far..this feedback is GREAT! it feels so far that the easiest thing is to move it to the cannon, where it is still central, visible, and piratey (is there a word?!?)..being a cannon and all. i know, being also an organizer of the o'fest, that the town non-profits are going on town hall lawn, so it would make sense for it to be there. thanks for the concern about complaints, but, having grown up here..i have heard it all, and try to dance the dance of compromise.. and, (when i am not swearing up a storm on the blog), i can be pretty diplomatic..when i need to be.. so that's all good..

how say thee rest 'o yer... arrgh??

Please don't move a thing! It is a wonderful tribute to Caleb, as well as a reminder of what an incredible community Wellfleet is. If that's not what the out-of-towners at Oysterfest should experience, I don't know what is.

Cannon Hill is an awful idea. What about over by the square dance stand at Mayo?

nothing could represent the town in a better light than this outpouring of love for one of its members. "spruced up grass" isn't why people love wellfleet...

why not put all of caleb's treasures in a large treasure chest, and leave it right where it is, front and center on the lawn?

Anonymous said...

Why don't we move it to Sharyn's house(With her concent, of coarse)??? Maybe by one of her gardens, so that Caleb can see all of the LOVE and SUPPORT as soon as he gets home. I think that would be the most ideal place for it. Pretty much all of the tourists are gone now, and anyone that Sharyn isn't familiar with is probably gone, so she won't have any strangers walking on her property....On the other hand, I think that Sharyn LOVES the unknown visitors, knowing that each and everyone is in FULL SUPPORT of her very much loved Son. It may be an invasion to Sharyn, and should be well thought out, but is definately worth asking about. Her property is so serean and peaceful, and would make a wonderful spot to go and send great energy to Caleb.

Dear Prayer circle folks....
Many a night we have been there on the town Hall lawn ....and felt the love and togetherness and felt the true energy of WELLFLEET from THAT circle.... we've all wanted to send THAT to Caleb and Sharyn and family.....

as an elder..... I have felt so much a part of this town in these circles....They have produced such a feeling of Community and Love....in ME...that when our community invites the Outside world to Oysterfest...it is our opportunity to SHARE this with all those who come to our town to Celebrate OYSTERS, OYSTER-PEOPLE and the Harbour that grows them. Caleb's accident and the outpouring of Community Spirit in support of the Potter family has HAD a center point.... ON TOWN HALL LAWN. We should move, if at all...to the cannon enclosure...so that visitors can share in that energy. It would only enhance their experience of Wellfleet and the Oysterfest.lovingly betsy cole and family

I would love to follow up on the words of my grandmother (just above). I am currently a few thousand miles away from our beautiful little town and I can't say how much it means to me to know there is a sacred spot in Wellfleet Center. Over the past couple months we have gathered together for Caleb, for our friends and family, for each other and for ourselves.

As a visual person it has been deeply meaningful to have the gifts, the flowers, the icons, photos and candles smack dab in the middle of our town symbolizing our strength, our humanity and our solidarity.

Gratefully we honor our town officials for permitting our gatherings but also as someone had mentioned above..."We ARE the town!" Let's face it: if there is anything that really matters in this world it's the people around us and the relationships and experiences we share. So if there is an important town matter, this is it! There is no doubt that Wellfleet has been touched and moved by all of this.

Let's see if there's some way to have the circle stay.

I will be home briefly in October. (YAY Oysterfest!) If my visit coincides with any Selectman's meetings I would be more than happy to say my part.

Just to add my two cents as a tourist for a week this summer....it was that central location that had us walking past nearly every day as we went to the markets or to get an icecream, day or night, that allowed us to see the spirit of the town in action. It is what makes Wellfleet so special I think, it's characters and it's community spirit. Because of Caleb and what I have learned from this blog, I was actually going to go to Oysterfest for the first time. Whatever is decided, I just hope that in no way will the spirit of what you have been doing be dimmed and that no devisiveness distract from the powerful support Caleb and his family are receiving. I'm sure a good decision will be made considering the wonderful people involved.

Leave it alone. There is no need to move it at all. it takes up only four feet square. Please... spruce up the grass, how bout getting rid of those lifeless suburbanite benches that only hold three people. Oh and those god awful trash cans that look like they came from Ikea only uglier. How bout recycle bins? These powers that be need to get there priorities straight. This town is owned by the community that resides in it. It seems to me that its a community who stands together in there support for Caleb and family. I say, the treasure stays in symbol of the communities support for Caleb. All the grass around it can be spruced up. Caleb embodies the spirit of this town more than (the eager to push the tourist industry to its limits) Chamber of Commerce. Let the Ailing Oysterman be in everyones consciousness during that weekend.

If it weren't for the Oystermen there would be no Oyster festival... AARRG.

I believe that if Caleb's things need to be relocated ( and a beautifully moving tribute it is) it should be somewhere very visible during the Oysterfest for the practical reason of raising money for his treatment. All of us that are not lucky enough to live on Cape Cod, but do come to visit can't help but be moved by the outpouring of community spirit and love that has been shown by the people of Fleet for their beloved pirate. Personally, I think Caleb's tribute should be left right where it is, in the heart of town.

It seems we all agree there should be something at Oysterfest that acknowleges our fallen Oysterman and prehaps lets people leave something behind (a donation prehaps). Just a silly question... what do they do with all the shucked oyster shells? (besides crush them for Cape Cod driveways) Can they be washed, and sold as ornaments to hang on the Spruce trees behind Caleb's circle? Kids would love to decorate them with glitter, markers, etc. and it could be a great activity for OysterFest.

I vote for keeping Caleb's circle where it is.

Caleb's healing goes through phases and stages. Likewise, so do we all in this. The DAILY prayer circle is an amazing event full of unparalleled love and community, but perhaps it is in its autumn. That is, perhaps it is time to move into the next stage of healing for us all as it seems also for Caleb with his pending transfer to Spaulding Rehab. With that said, it makes sense to me that we consider lessening the frequency of the prayer circle and consider holding ONE GRAND AND FINAL DAILY PRAYER CIRCLE and WE HOLD IT DURING OYSTERFEST, given that Caleb is in fact an oysterman. Then, after this final daily prayer circle, we transition to the next phase of this for the town and for Caleb, perhaps marked by less frequent prayer circles (weekly? bi-weekly? monthly?) As for the Caleb shrine, I believe it will become clear once the prayer circle frequency issue is addressed and answered. Frankly, the new community center strikes me as a great place, with its nice park. Regardless, this is an amazing community and this idea does not mean to diminish our concern nor contribution to Caleb's daily healing but rather to recognize the process for us all. I cannot speak for you, but this makes sense to me.

Hello again all you addicted bloggers:
These prayer circles were formed with every intention on being a twice daily event until Caleb's return to Wellfleet. Trust me, I organized the place and time. That was the intention, and for a healing miracle for Caleb. It has basically been decided to move the "shine" to the cannon for Oysterfest, and I don't see why it can't return to the lawn after the event. As for those who feel a less frequent prayer circle is in order, you've obviously been out of town for quite some time. Ther are NEVER enough people there to actually form a circle around the shrine. We need 7 people to do that and its NEEDED!!!!!! If everyone who lives on-Cape comes twice a week, whenever they can, we'd be able to have nightly circles in an actual circle. Its cute that everyone is concerned, yet it would be grand if they actually were here. People say they "miss the circles the way they were" and I do too. Caleb has shown us that he still needs the prayers and we should be in town some nights to support his healing. Judith- I better see you at town meeting in November. Its an event I look forward to for months and love actually practicing democracy! Caleb has dedicated his future to shellfishing and has been as huge part of the Oysterfest for years ( as have many of us.) PLEASE be supportive and actually come and pray now that the summer is over. Its all locals now, who better than to gather for Caleb. Thank you for caring and I'll see you.... tommorrow night??? Hope so.

I both live and work closest to the Prayer Circle. Yes, the Prayer Circle numbers have dwindled, but the love and concern for Caleb and his family has not! I said this before here that every day since July 4th I have questions and concerns about Caleb asked of me. On a daily basis I see people stop at their own time to check out the Town Hall Lawn Shrine. A number of people here have said Caleb is an Oysterman and it's the Oysterfest. That thought just yells out loud at me! I mean that in a positive way. Settie's idea of putting the shrine in the vacant lot next to the church strikes me as a great second location! Maybe some items could be placed in front of the picket fence for more exposure, especially for the Oysterfest. There is lighting from the street lights that helps that location at night there. The center of town is a focal point, everywhere else is not. My two cents for what it's worth.

Anonymous said...

You're awesome Kevin, and Settie, but as an Osterfestman, I know that lot is full of tents during the fest and it wouldn't get the attention it needs. Shaye (the one we can thank for Caleb being alive, dispit the charges from the Wellfleet PD) is hosting a Caleb Potter tent on Main Street during the O'fest. Plus the shrine will be close to where it is now, at the cannon.. WE'd hate for the topic of conversation to go from how caleb's doing to where the heck did the shrine go during Oysterfest. Thanks to all who still gather in prayer and always to those who pray at home. If we set our intention, Caleb should be back at Spaulding within the week!!!!!

I agree with the pier idea but then I agree even more with the indoors idea as it is going to get COLD and rainy. Who says you have to suffer while you gather????

Anonymous said...

hey, suffer while you gather in the cold???
WEAR A WET SUIT!!!
some of you remember the night at the circle this summer when we were thanking caleb (& shaye) for not having this accident occur when the weather was cold, bcz it was so easy to gather in the summer.
i agree with all who say let's keep it (essentially) where it is.
THE CANNON is a great place. so simple, a no brainer. it is a unit unto itself & maintains the visibility that draws so many to it.
the thought of moving it for the fest is pure sillines. ch's words ring true...how would we explain ourselves...
"we use to be a commpassionate town but it's oysterfest time and this oysterman's shrine was in the way, arrrrrgh, so we dun away with it!"
what an honor to be known as the Cape Cod town with a HEART, not just the town with the BEST beaches!
seriously, is this not what communities are for? we have MOST certainly "COME INTO UNITY" through this experience and the majority (who have posted) say keep it where it is...
the cannon makes sense since every pirate ship has a cannon, eh?.
to leave it right on the lawn does NOT make sense with thousands & thousands of feet at the fest trampling the lawn...
it IS looking a bit frayed with the long grass poking up between every little gift and candle.
let's set a date & make it happen.
no doubt enough people will show up that each person only has to move ONE item!!!
if there are local folks challenged by the altar, then we need tokeep them in our prayers too! PEACE & LOVE start at home.
on another note....
we have come up with a GREAT way to raise $ for the lebster AND S.P.A.T. AND two lucky winners.
we will be doing a 3 way raffle.
1/3 to leb, 1/3 to S.P.A.T., 1/3 to the winner(s)...
the plan is for 2 peeps to sell (walking around the fest) for 2 hour shifts each day, 10-3...so 10-12, 12-2 & then till 3...so there's a little flexibility in there.
to volunteer for a shift please be in touch with "Prayer Circle Organizer"

I like the idea of a "thank you" sign for a few weeks in place of all the things on the lawn now. I think this blog helps people to stay in touch with Calebs progress. The town has been most generous letting people gather on the lawn for the past almost 3 months. And I think the weekly prayer circle at Lisa's is a good idea and a nice transition from town hall lawn.

That lawn is the perfect spot to serve as the focus of the town's united compassion.

Whoever suggested moving should be overruled by the Selectmen.

Thers no need to squable. Its our town and our lawn and our Selectmen. We've found Caleb
shrine a perfect home, right next door to where it is now. Lisa is one of the coolest women that have ever lived and is a Fleetian to the core. Her heart is bigger than me and I'm sure a musical prayer circle could possibly happen there, with Caleb's things remaining in town center. Its beautiful how each visitor has contributed to the shrine in some way over the summer, and there are visitors and locals alike who continue to drop flowers and goodies by for our fellow crewmember. Caleb loves it where it is. Honestly, the grass looks GREAT!!! I wish my lawn had been surounded with positive energy all summer!

Can you put up your own tent right over the spot for Oysterfest?

It seems silly that Wellfleet would not wish to leave the Caleb stuff right where it is as a way to celebrate its 'famous' Oysterman during the festival.

Came across this blog awhile back and learned about about Caleb's story. And the story of his family. And of Wellfleet. Check in now and again for... still, to this day, I am struck by the outpouring of love and support and strength of the Wellfleet community.

There is a brilliant light that shines from all of your hearts. It reaches us around the world and we look in with awe and wonder and admiration and respsect for the love represented there each day. All because of, and for, a guy named Caleb and his family.

It is hard to imagine that a patch of grass could be spruced up to look any more beautiful than it does right now...

If I could say one thing to the dpw and to the town administrator is The caleb potter prayer circle in front of town hall is the most beautiful and loving expression of what is is to be a fleet resident.
The bond of the people there is amazing and more of the other towns on the cape should take note. More of all the people in the other towns should take note. I live in harwich and even though I love my town It doesn't have the same sense of belonging as the fleet. Since caleb was already prior to the accident a town celebrity and a oysterman.Wouldn't you think that the town would be happy to have his prayer circle right at the very place that he was seen everyday.Shame on you meaning the dpw and town hall. This circle and treasures of caleb potter are exactly what your town is about not green cut grass.Shame on you for making something so personal something about politics.
Caleb Potter and his family have supported that town for years and years NOW it time for paying it forward and supporting him. My prayers go out to caleb daily and
also to all those wonderful young people of whom have kept this amazing prayer circle going .You are true loving people. Hey town hall take note that there is something great going on in your yard not something bad that could be the case.Leave it be and let the grass grow!!!

Moving time can be stressful and an oppurtunity for growth. Praying for Caleb i find myself extending the peace/light to all suffering beings. The circle is powerful...i for one will be there tonight, thanks for the encouragement to stay physically present. This energy can heal the world as well as caleb. ann m

Who is "the town" anyway? I thought that was us....I'm confused again but it would not be the first time when dealing with "the town". Caleb's treasures could always be moved over to the other side of the walk way for a fresh perspective and even more visablity and a new arrangement would be great, like redecorating. That is my idea of sprucing things up
