On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Freedom

I am touched by the ever increasing - pro Town Lawn comments concerning Caleb and the Oysterfest. I am also encouraged by the insistence that I write about this experience- but I have to say to my good friend Kevin that any publisher in his/her right mind would exorcise his comments immediately-I would have an image to uphold- and he could easily be the ruin of me!
Around the witching hour I took a deep breath, took all your comments and inhaled them heartily, walked away from Caleb for an hour, went back to my new apt., poured myself a glass of chianti, took a pampering hot bath, and then ran back to the hospital -- well I am practicing! Brilliant tho - I feel better!
As for the red lipstick -( and this is the honest to God truth )- Only I and Condelissa Rice are passionate about this Channel color and therefore I cannot divulge the number --come to think of it I may have inadvertently told my sister and now I am going to have to kill her!
Caleb's drain is out - they have him girdled so he can no longer pull out his G-tube (food tube) and his IV line is heavily armed with gauze - so perhaps ( and we are experimenting tonight) he will no longer need the restraints..to me - this smacks of freedom. A free spirit is not easily chained and already as I write this I look up to witness a beautifully, peaceful, sleeping boy. First time in what feels like a decade!
I think it has finally become clear to the nursing staff that I am making my home here ( if they want you to leave why do they stock the visitors fridge with ice cream?) They wheeled in a cot and I am looking forward to a blissful sleep - I'll be dreaming of you...

Glad to hear your hot bath brought you a little peace. I'm sure your new apartment doen't have a cow skin rug or its own space heater... But dreams of the ggod things to come. Its great that Caleb rests too. When he is well, we are well. As for Kevin, he was taking caleb's usual spot at the Bomb for a round with the ladies and final glimps of summer. Please enjoy tomorrow ( Thurs) as its the last official day of summer. The autumn will bring the brillients of change, and a steady recovery we hope. we miss you, Caleb, Please get well soon.

It sounds as if you both are coming to a kind of accommodation with this life you have for now.... which is a good thing. You can't get used to it or get over it, but you can learn to live with it, and that should get a bit easier as Caleb heals and you heal along with him.
I hope your dreams bring you peace....

Dear sharyn,
So good to hear that he's sleeping peacefully, less restrained, and that you were able to take care of yourself for a while - next time, try 2 hours!! With the lessening of the "horrors" you've experienced in the last 2 weeks especially (not to mention since July 4th), perhaps you'll be able to get a new rhythm to the days to prepare you for when you both come home. We all know there is a long road ahead, and it will be so helpful to you if the situation there can settle a bit, almost into a routine that will give you time to regroup, restrengthen, and rejoice that things are going well, improving....

and if people send you the wrong number lipstick, wear it with love and pride for all who support you hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.....it'll look beautiful because of where it came from and why....

visualizing you both sleeping peacefully will set many minds at ease.....gotta go --phone's ringing ...me and Condoleeza have to chat about something..

Just wanted everyone who reads todays blog to understand that my dear friend Kevin and I have a friendship based on laughter and banter--he simply knows too much about me ------ my comment about him is just that!

OK, just saying this as a guy... I haven't actually *seen* the lipstick color in question, so this is not based on the merits... but if there's even a parallel to be drawn between you and Condy, you may want to reconsider... ;)

i am so appreciative that a collective voice can make a compassionate and intelligent decision concerning the circle.. i wouldn't have expected anything less!
at the cannon on town lawn it shall stay, and be part of the non-profit centerpiece of the 'fest. thanks everybody for your wonderful imput.

You're too funny!!! ;)...You'll take that Channel # to the grave with you, huh? Well, it does look quite dashing on you....lol, and we wouldn't want anyone to discover that beauty secret. You are the only woman that I know in her fifties that still has the look/body of a twenty year old, and the bubbly personalty to go with it....Obviously your beauty secrets are doing you wonders. Keep up the great work.

Also, very happy to hear that you took an hour,or so,to unwind yesterday. A relaxing warm bath and glass of wine can do wonders for the soul. I bet that you felt nice and refreshed when you reurned to the Hospital. And that ice cream in the mini-bar...I hope that you indulged in that too. Who sais that you can't cure a heartache with sweets!!?!???!!

Glad to hear that all is well in Caleb Land!!! Stay well! :)

Talk soon,
~Nicole Miner

there is nothing like watching your child comfortably and peacefully sleep.....it doesn't matter how old they get....it is always so beautiful and cherished......

about the town lawn, again.....when people started to gather, Lisa, with forthright took it upon herself to apply for the permit for people to gather on town hall lawn twice daily.....however, she was doing her good work in Haiti when the selectmen meeting for approval/discussion was held so I went as the representative....the first meeting, somehow...the actual permit was not there so the selectmen agreed to allow the gathering to continue without a permit until the following weeks meeting,,,,,,,the following week they had the required paperwork and graciously and quickly approved the permit with no conditions and very few questions......the only questions were in concern for Caleb and his health.....recognizing what a wonderful thing was going on in town........

I too agree....it should stay put or be raised up in the cannon platform.....at least through oysterfest.....however, I don't think it needs to be turned into a money/fundraising effort......keep it what it is....a place of gathering, reflection, prayer and love.....let those experiencing Wellfleet maybe for the first time get a true feeling for the incredible love and energy this community has created surrounding Caleb's journey......it goes way beyond Caleb at this point and is a reflection of what fleetians and their hearts and goodwill are capable of regarding one of our "own".....
Caleb has medical insurance....fundraising efforts over a 7 1/2 week period this summer netted approximately $150,000.....an amazing feat unto itself and another example of this towns and extended families generosity......this should be a hearty sum to cover living expenses and anything uncovered for quite a while.......if more funds are needed in the future....we can have a winter community dance or any number of other great ideas.......for now...the focus on healing and thanks for what we have...let's keep it pure and simple....and central and visible...no hand outs needed.......just everyones heart.

Sharyn, I hate to tell you this but you told us the number of your Chanel red lipstick in an earlier post!!

I won't repeat it in fear of you killing me (but in case people are looking to send it to you, they might want to check out a post around the end of August...)

So wonderful to hear good news about Caleb! Nicole from Home

please read posting # 52 or 53 on "About the Lawn"...
jodi's concerns about not making caleb's altar about $ are not unfounded, but the fest is a great opportunity to raise $. out of towners have already expressed their desire to see some way to donate to caleb (beyond mailing into Cape Cod 5)
PLUS
it has ALWAYS been the intention of S.P.A.T to do a raffle (for 7 years!) but they have never had enough volunteers to do it.
the previously posted plan makes sense.

Sharyn, I am very happy knowing Caleb is doing better, and you are comfy by his side, after caring for yourself. We all know your good intentions, sometimes words jumble things up, but here there is only love, and joy for you.
Thats so awesome Shaye will be having a space for Caleb in the Fest. Also, I am content knowing Caleb's alter/sacred space will be moved only so far, and of course below the cannon.

I agree with Jodi, and would also like to acknowledge in full the people outside of Wellfleet that have contributed thus far, other Cape Cod Towns, and visitors/non-locals as you may call them I suppose. Wellfleet is of course a compassionate town, and we have Caleb, Sharyn, and the whole family to thank for opening our eyes & hearts that much more. I can only hope for Caleb's full recovery, and for the union to stay sincere, and solid. Thank you Ennie for your efforts at the circles, and let us not forget ALL that
have participated.. love you all!! ~Clance

Cots are cool. I used to love sleeping over at my grandmother's house, because she had this cool old canvas cot all hidden in her closet. I loved that my "sleepover" bed lived in a closet, and only was unfolded for me. Ahhhh...memories. I am so happy to hear that caleb is going to be back at spaulding! Back on the road to fleet!!!!! Good job practicing with the hot bath and wine.....there should be more of that kind of thing in your future sharyn. Who knows, maybe shannon and I will show up, kidnap you one evening and have one fun night out dancin'!!! Please give caleb my love............

hey sharyn
I am so happy to hear that the lad is on the move. My hopes are high for his return to the fleet. this is after all THE most important thing. I am not one for prayer circles and alters and shrines (I have not one thing against them so dont hate me but then, I dont go to church either.) my prayers for the lad and your family are deep and from my soul. I know they will be heard and my love for you all is always there.

We truely live in a magical place! The Oysterfest will have Caleb's spirit all over it and there will be a place for people to donate to Caleb if they want to. Shaye's tent is on Main Street and all profits are for Caleb. Also, SPAT, being the original purpose of Oysterfest, is considering a three way raffle, rather than a 50/50. Friends of Caleb's are incouraged to participate if interested. This years Oysterfest will be Wellfleet's best ever. Thanks Jodi for your thoughts for keeping his shrine sacred. It is the most beautiful compilation of love and art the outer Cape has ever mustered up. All who have sat and wrote in the book, lit a candle, or been a voice in an om session... should be proud! I'm patting you all on the back and hugging you all with my heart!
