girlfriend update!!!

So this is my guest appeatance for the week. Like I said last week, Sharyn asks me to write in the blog when I come to see Caleb on Mondays and Tuesdays. Just for a reminder, I'm Jennie, Caleb's girlfriend. Caleb is back at Spaulding Rehab as all of you know, and going well. He is back in therapy and has all the same PT, OT and ST ( which are his three different therapies he goes through during the week.) I was told that all his therapists asked to have him again and fought for him as a patient, because they enjoying seeing his improvements and love his personality. Yesterday, Sharyn and I stole Caleb and brought him outside to feel the breeze and look at the ocean and the boats. We then tried to feed the geese with our bagels, but Caleb was hungry so he ate it instead. Then he grabbed my gatorade ( if you know Caleb, you know he loves gatorade) and drank some of it and handed it back to me. Since he was obviously hungry, we brought him back to his room for dinner. He ate almost his whole dinner, which included pasta, soup, bread and some vegtables. While he was eating dinner, he was getting food on his fingers, and he was licking the food off his fingers. For some reason it was the cutuest thing ever...funny how the littlest things make me so excited when I am around Caleb. He got his IV taking out yesterday, which is so exciting. This wasnt any IV, this was a PIC line, and when the doctor was pulling it out, it looked like a bird pulling out a worm from a tree hole. But Caleb is a fighter, and he just watched and wanted to assist the doctor. If he continues to eat three meals a day, drink enough water and get enough calories, his feeding tube will be removed within the next couple days. This is the last tube he has in him, so that is very exciting. Caleb will be "tube free". Yesterday, we were able to snuggle and take a nap together. I fit perfect right next to him, and he brought his arm up and ran his fingers through my hair like he used to. So when people ask me if Caleb recognizes me...Yes, he definitly remembers me and I know that by the way he acts and the little things that he does. I have pictures that I will be uploading when I get home. So Check back later to see some recent pictures of Caleb.
.....I put this computer on Caleb's lap, and told him to write whatever he wanted. SO this is what he typed...."what the hell is that undergrouned Maax " and " hiiiiii peeps its the rockbar hanging with the eal ." he got alittle tired because he just had physical therapy, so I think that is why he didnt finish.
Caleb wantes to go wheel around in the hall so I have to go now. love you all and thank u again for your thoughts and supports.
-love jennie

Jennie & family,
You don't know me - I stumbled across the blog several weeks ago and have been glued to it ever since. I'm from Florida and was in Mass. last week on business - I was aching to go check out Wellfleet as you guys make it sound so great! I just wanted to drop you a note because I was once in your shoes - 14 years ago, my boyfriend almost died from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. He was in a coma and ICU for so long and I took great comfort from the little things and the small steps of progress. All turned out well - we're married with two kids (we went back to the midnight shift at the hospital to tell the nursing staff as we had grown to love them). So keep the faith - things can and do get better. Although it didn't feel like it at the time, it helped us realize just how much we meant to each other. I wish that I'd had as much support as all of you have on a blog like this. It felt so lonely back then (I didn't even have a cell phone!!! so the hours in the hospital with him slipping away far away from home were tough). I guess that is why I check this blog every day - I'm cheering for you and the whole family. Thanks for sharing your touching updates. I wrote letters to my guy every night throughout his illness and when we woke up and got better, it really blew him away to read all of the details. One day this blog is going to mean so much to Caleb... I can't wait to read the update that he writes for himself!

Jennie, great news coming from Spaulding!! I'm so glad Caleb was able to get outside and feel the sunlight on his face. That is HUGE!
I hope Sharyn is getting some rest while you update us, she deserves a little time away.

It is a shame the trip from Boston to Wellfleet is so long, it would be great if Caleb could make a guest appearance at the Oystefest.

He will be there in spirit I'm sure.

Jennie, another stranger who checks in daily from the UK. We visited Wellfleet and Capecod in July and have followed this momentous journey ever since. I feel as if I have been on this rollercoaster with you and Calebs family. Of course, its impossible to compare what you have actually been through, but I can say that I have felt pain through the rough times and now feel pure joy as I read this, its wonderful to know he is loved and is getting better and you are finally getting your pirate back. Jennie- Thanks for all the happy news. Having a little snuggle time is just as important as the therapy. It's so kind of you to spend even a moment with all of us well wishers. Caleb- kudos to the man who knows what he needs;food, drink, love, air, and sun. Keeping it simple... My thoughts are with you all. ann m.

Hi Jennie,
Another "stranger" checking in. Thanks for the great post. A great huzza to Caleb on the great progress. I expect that getting some outside air and cuddling did him quite well.

Thank you for your post. There is nothing better than fresh air - especially autumnal New England air -to soothe and renew. Fresh air, cuddling with your love, AND having Mom close by.....no wonder he's doing so well!
Prayers as always,

Jennie, thank you for the post. It's great to hear so many details about Caleb's day. I love the quotes, reminds me of Bob Dylan lyrics that take on different meanings all the time. We're thinking of you Caleb!

What is that sound?? It sounds like a mighty wind blowing through all of our psyches....the sound of a huge sigh of relief.....so much worry, so much tension and now so much progress.....I feel as if a fresh breeze is blowing in off the water, and all of our hopeful wishes are coming true. What a treat to come home to such a sweet loving post. You and Caleb are are very fortunate to have found each other. And snuggling can cure a multitude of ills.....

Jennie,

Great job! I know Sharyn will really appreciate your efforts. You forgot to mention one kind of therapy Caleb receives... JT... Jennie Therapy! That's gotta be Caleb's favorite! Snuggle some more! Like I am sure you need prodding! Get that Caleb back to the Fleet!

Hi Jennie, That is awesome news! Thank you for sharing. You don't know me but I know and love Caleb's Aunt Carol. She was my son's fifth grade teacher last year and she had the most amazing impact on him. I have been following the blog since the first prayer circle in the ocean and have posted a few times. I am so happy that you all are seeing progress and continued good things. You will all remain in my heart and prayers.
Take care,

To anonymous,

Disco Night at the Lighthouse is a lot of fun! Mostly over 40's are there. Some younger for sure. 70's Disco music of course. Very crowded! A lot of dancing. A couple of years ago they where dancing on Main St. there was so little room inside.

I am so happy to hear such great news. Getting a pic line out is good for everyone especially Caleb you feel a lot less controlled and a little more free, just one more step closer to sitting in the Wellfleet air and sunshine where he belongs. Jennie your perspective is enlightening knowing how much you care for eachother. I too am hoping Sharyn is getting some rest so she can orchestrate wheelchair races (he he). I also say that the more cuddling the better because there is no better medicine (trust me I know from experience). With tons of love, care, and always support I will and have always been here/there quietly or loudly and I will catch all of you anytime you need to be caught.
The news of Caleb's progress made for a very hot and sunny day on the Cape maybe a breath of comfort sent from Caleb giving us all cause to take a breath. I send tons of lipstick kisses for all and most importantly warm tender hugs for those in need.
Please if you can one of you whisper to Caleb for me that when I too must struggle with my health set backs and sometimes progress I have looked to him for a sense of calm and joy and always I have found it so "thank you, thank you, thank you". Keep eating so you can be tubeless and FREE!!! Oysterfest will certainly be missing you and your ever pleasant and loving presense. Thank you Jennie for writing your little joys, for many times they are what makes moments memorable and special. With your's, Sharyn's (especially Sharyn's), and Sky's it allows us all to join in your feelings whether good or bad. Thank you.
Love, Rachael

Dear, Dear Jennie,

Caleb is one lucky Pirate to have you at his side....You are showing such strength and courage under pressure. I know things haven't been easy for you, and that the seas were turbulent a while back, but you have shown such tender loving care for Caleb. Your example of caring, compassion, and selfless love is so evident. It's been said over and over in these posts how lucky Caleb is to have such a loving and caring family, though at times disjounted (welcome to the real world), well your life has shined a very important light in his life. We all thank you for that light, and everything that comes with it. Your combined efforts have served Caleb well, and he continues on his journey to wellness....we are grateful.

Hey there Caleb, remember my friend, "The journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step"...we are with you every step of the way...continued heaing my friend. Blessings this night.

We hold you all in Love and Light Jennie.

Peace,

Melinda

Jenny,

I have a suggestion. . . next time you visit the hospital leave Caleb with something of yours that smells like you. Usually a t-shirt that you sleep in or something like that. The smell of a loved one is so soothing. . .It does wonders.
