On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Back in the saddle

Oh my God - it was soooo wonderful to be back in Fleet for those two days - I feel energized and refreshed and so appreciative of where I live! Had dinner out at the Juice, my favorite place, and got to visit with my fat dog and fluffy cat and to see the boys in their element - Oh yea!!! Caleb now has beads up the wazoo thanks to so many of his generous friends--and I can't wait for his designs to spill out - he is very creative and now we have the materials to let him cut loose. Thank you!
- I feel confident that all will go well for Shaye in spite of the outcome on the 28th. I think the police have to take this approach for legal reasons , but I am convinced that they will do the right thing in the end --I am writing another letter to the chief to suggest that Shaye might just get community service and pay that off by helping Caleb with physical therapy. That would be so healing for the both of them. What is up with this chief title anyways! Perhaps we should all come up with titles for ourselves. (Don't even think about suggestions for me)
Carol was so terrific to take my place and mother Caleb while I was gone, it was the only way I was going to be able to leave his side. Nothing like family when life hits rock bottom. As sisters go - we have had our ups and downs but when I need her - she always has my backside. This speaks volumes about her.
So now for the update on Caleb--I came back to the happiest sight of all..Caleb looking at me and connecting for the first time in about 2 weeks. What a miracle all those prayers produced. He is alert and as I spoke to him he would nod his head allowing me to know that he understood everything I was saying. He kisses me again and oh that is heavenly! He is yanking away at his IV lines and is restless and back to looking more like Caleb. The relief in me is palpable!!! The ID dude is downright giggly over Caleb's improvements and I swear I am going to pack him up and move him to Fleet with us. We are out of the toilet and are back in the pool! Weeeeeeeee!
We remain grateful to all of you and hold you tight through this journey. Love, the mumsie. Good to be back on line - I have missed you so!

I believe that once the charges are filed, it's up to the DA whether to pursue a conviction, accept a plea bargain (community service) or drop the foolishness altogether.

Hey to sharyn....and caleb's crew....twas so sweet to share the circle of 50!!! with you on Tuesday night....and to be there for your once around the circle go 'round....we all know how big THAT circle REALLY is...and if we all had been there, you'd still be kissin' and hugging ....and then some!!!!

It was sooooo good to finally be able to give some lovin' in person....now we're all back to the long distance thing.....that CAN work All-most as well!!!! (-;

We'd had a circle of 30...earlier in the evening : for peace and Stopping the War....so it was only fitting to move the candles over as an outer circle for Caleb for HIS circle at 9 !!!!~ and we'd been drumming w/Lisa B. and friends since 7pm.....so the tribal energies were humming for the rest of the night.

Tis soooooo good to hear that Our Pirate is really back to his own self....glowing as Caleb can....especially after seeing his form in "full leap" via Denmark and last Year's end Gathering...thanks to Sky!!!!~

and good to hear it from the "horse's mouth....ooooops....guess that's not possible if yr "back in the saddle"...guess I'll stop ....right THERE!!!

we Love you and send all of our BEST to MGH this lovely day in August....with September seemingly moments away....We shall all miss Cabes at the fireworks tonight...his presence/participation is always memorable and inspiring 0-;....

we shall have to ARRRRGHHH for him THIS year at the FIREWORKS....and Hoot for him during our Classic Surf Movies on Friday at the Library...

he'll be Home to us ...soon enuff....Soon Come, Mon ...we Love you....light!ly...ch/dad in the Hollow

I love Joan's idea Sharyn, you should keep that in mind!
I think as often as you can, come home to fleet and re-charge the batteries, it will do you and Caleb a world of good.
Shaye will be fine, I just know it in my heart.
Peace be with you and enjoy the kisses.

AWESOME-AWESOME-AWESOME!!! So glad to hear that our Caleb is doing well again. YAY!!! :)

And, so glad to hear that you had a wonderful time in Fleet. That, I'm sure, was much needed by you, my Dear. I'm also very greatful that I got to hug and kiss you the other night at prayer circle. That was much needed by ME. I missed the normalcy of Wellfleet, and I think that seeing you for even a few seconds brought it back. Fantastico!!!
I miss you all, and can't wait to see you all again soon.

As for Shaye...I think that all will turn out well in the end also. Shaye is a great person and deserves the best. I think that the physical therapy/community service idea is a good one. I too think that that will be beneficial to them both in the healing process.

Love,

Nicole Miner :)

So good to read Sharyn's words and hear the relief she feels. We are heading down to Wellfleet this afternoon for the long weekend and can't wait to see and feel all that energy again.

For the person who asked about the Juice, it's a small and very casual restaurant that serves good meals at very reasonable prices---pizzas, quesadillas, salads, etc. Always fresh and always friendly service. At the corner of Commercial Street and whatever that street is that cuts off downhill at the Marketplace.

See you there!

Amy

so glad to hear from you again! and what great news!

i had a special altar for caleb on sunday with pictures from past hootafests, a poster from the one where i had to carry caleb home, etc. some summers i'll go from 4th of july til hootafest without seeing caleb, its just how the summer goes. it was hard not seeing him there this year. but i know he was there, jagging it up with us in spirit!

the next event for us is our annual phone call on international talk like a pirate day. i have no doubts he'll be up and ready by then!

P.s. The Juice is only the BEST place to eat on The Cape.. Chad the juicemon is awesome, the food is killer, and the staff is great! He is also a dear friend to Caleb..

Excellent news.

As we celebrated my boy's 30th birthday last night (wait, did I say 30??? how did that happen, wasn't it just yesterday I was putting him on the bus for his very first day of school, watching his little face pressed up against the window while he waved joyfully to me?...sorry, I digress...), we spoke of Caleb and of your family and realize how grateful we are. We are grateful that our own children are healthy, happy and downright fun to hang out with, we are grateful that Caleb has turned yet another big corner, and we are grateful to live here on this beautiful sandbar, our own personal piece of heaven, where people care about one another, where neighbors help neighbors in their time of need, where generosity of the human spirit comes through loud and clear every day on this blog.

Thank you Sharyn, Caleb and family for allowing us to share in your journey, for in doing so, our hearts and minds have been expanded.

With gratitude and respect,
Audrey

It was nice to see you the other night at the circle. We are glad to hear Caleb is doing better.
I was also thinking that maybe if they allow Shaye to do community service he could perhaps go to the schools to stress the use of helmets and safety gear for our extreme sports fanatics!!! Our thoughts are always with You, Caleb,Kai,Max, Jan, and Jenn

yesterday i brought my little pirate to 'Fleet from Brewsta, some of you may have seen him, a 3yr wearing a bandana and eye patch screaming ARRGGHHHH MATEY!!! at everyone... we visited the circle and i showed him the biggest baddest pirate of em' all... Jack said "where is Pirate Potter?", and I said "out to sea, but you will know when his ship comes in cause pirates make a lot noise!!!"

A few of us had our own prayer circle in the water last night in eastham, under the large orange moon, one of those feelings that you would like to bottle up and drink in the harshest of winter... nothing like surfing in the moonlight

I have been following this blog ever since I returned from a vacation to Wellfleet. We rented a home from a person I work with in Northampton, MA. who is a surfer. Come to find out he knows Shaye and has a picture that Shaye did for him hanging in his office.

We do not know Caleb but feel like we do from this blog.

I am glad to hear the great news today. I hope Caleb continues to get better and grow stronger each day.

It was wonderful to read such positive words today; I'm so glad that Caleb continues to improve. Your writing has such energy and clarity, and today I feel your joy and gratitude. One happy mama.:)

Your idea for Shaye is so perfect. I feel for him, his heart must be very tortured now....but your family's support must mean so much to him.

Caleb will be in my thoughts and prayers daily, until he's healed and free of the pokings and proddings and IVs....a spirit like his needs to MOVE!

RE: Justice:

Restore
1. to make whole:
2. to bring back to a former, original, or normal condition, as a building, statue, or painting.
3. to bring back to a state of health, soundness, or vigor.
4. to give back; make return or restitution of (anything taken away or lost).

Restorative justice is what we need, not punitive (in)justice which is what we have.
