I was slowly driving thru The Sparrow's lot in Orleans today. I drove by some skateboarders and I could see in my rearview mirror that one was going for my bumper. He disappeared out of my vision. I slowly slowed to a stop and got out of the car. I implored the young man thru tears to never do that again. He cussed at me. We need to be responsible and help spread the word about skateboard safety.

Morning all.
Thanks to all the great personalities that showed up at the auction!
It was a HUGE success and we hauled in some major booty for the ol' pirate.
The free food was over the top- many thanks to the big hearts of Cosmos Catering, Bubala's, Eric Jansen, Mac's Seafood and the shellfisherman of Wellfleet.
Not to leave anyone out, we had beautiful jazz by Rob Scott and Dance Fight, wonderful volunteers who covered every square foot and the helpful staff of the Chequesett Yacht and Country Club.
Reven Oliver you rock too.
Kisses to all of you!

Enough evidence to charge driver in July 4 accident
By Doug Fraser

ORLEANS — It was a decision neither family wanted.

Yesterday, Orleans District Clerk Magistrate Stephen Ross decided there is enough evidence to charge Shaye Cavanaugh, 27, in the July 4 accident that seriously injured his friend Caleb Potter.

Potter, 25, fell while being towed on a skateboard behind Cavanaugh's truck. He is still in Massachusetts General Hospital recovering from injuries that doctors at first thought might prove fatal or leave him severely brain damaged.

Cavanaugh will be arraigned on Sept. 24 on charges of driving to endanger and allowing someone to be towed while operating a motor vehicle.

Potter's mother, Sharyn Lindsay, said yesterday she left her son's side for the hearing, to support Cavanaugh. She doesn't blame him for the incident, but says her son is an active, adventure-loving man.

"In retrospect, do I wish he hadn't hitched a ride that day? Yes," she said. But she doesn't believe he would have listened to words of caution, either.

"He's an extreme-sports kind of guy," she said.

Although Potter cannot speak and is not walking, he has some use of his hands, his mother said. Doctors are trying to get a bacterial infection in his brain under control, according to Lindsay.

The town of Wellfleet has rallied in support of Potter, who was self-employed but had some medical insurance. Still, he faces a long recovery and a mountain of bills, as well as loss of income.

Signs on the highway and throughout the town ask for prayers. Web sites track Potter's medical progress, public prayer circles pray for his recovery, and several local benefits have been held to raise money to help pay for his medical treatment.

The Cavanaugh family declined comment yesterday after the closed door hearing, but they were obviously upset. Both families are close. Lindsay and Jan Potter, her ex-husband and Caleb's father, wrote a letter to the Wellfleet police supporting Cavanaugh.

Lindsay said she feels Cavanaugh should not be charged since the incident wouldn't have happened if her son hadn't grabbed onto the truck and hitched a ride.

Before the hearing was closed, Ross cautioned those in the courtroom that any decision to charge a person does not imply guilt, it only means there was enough evidence to indicate a crime may have been committed.
