On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

27th ofAugust

I am anxious beyond words to be leaving Caleb - but my flight is out tonight and Carol, my sister, is here to watch guard. Believe me she is part bulldog/pitbull when she needs to be so he is in good hands. Infectious Disease just made the rounds- you learn to love some of these guys. This one, in Calebs' charge is a so into his job and it makes me aware of how in all walks of life we should be doing our very best at whatever our job is - it soooo matters.. be the best you can be, do the very best you can. And tho I spent many a day bitching about my job, now it seems that all I want is that normal routine. We are told that tho Caleb is clinically better - they still find he has enormous amounts of bacteria and so today they hit him with the big guns to give him a jump start. I am ambivalent, but trust this man. They need to watch for kidney damage so he will continue to be closely monitored. In my heart I feel he has turned the corner into health and well being and we move forward from here on out and do not look back. With that said I need some help finding a source of beads - big ones to string on elastic cord. I started helping Caleb to relieve boredom by having him work with beads and I am planning on having him make bracelets to give to the nurses. I am not above trying to influence or bribe! So I know some of you out there have sources - please let me know.
Tomorrow at two is Shayes' hearing..I have picked out my most official jewelry, black dress and high heels, and along with my Channel #5 red lipstick. I plan to dazzle the judge so much that he forgets why we are there! Keep in mind that I am 54 and we could probably still use some of your prayers along with all of this!
Can't hurt! See you all at the circle and I bring all of you who can't be there inside my heart. Love, Mumsie

You are an ageless beauty. You will walk in that courtroom and knock that judges's socks off - provided he is a he and is not wearing sandals. Best of luck to you and Shaye.

Hello Sharyn,

I am glad to hear that Caleb is making progress. Mother's instincts are usually right so I too believe that he is on his way back to recovery.

I think the judge needs to know how close these boys are...how close the whole community is. The last thing Wellfeet needs is anymore heartache. There is no benefit to the community if Shaye is punished. There is no punishment that could be awarded that would cause Shaye more regret than what has already happened. I worry because the US seems so eager to throw people in jail.

I have seen small misadventures that make amusing antidotes in the local newspaper in Canada, (breaking into a house drunk and making a sandwich, then falling asleep on the couch) result in a ride home in the police car in Canada but end up with 2 year jail term in the US. I hope that the judge has some wisdom.

Here's wishing for all optimal outcomes!

Struggling with my own demons, this blog has taken me out of my self and reminds me daily that every situation can be a blessing, no matter what -it's all about the willingness to go beyond the heartache - you touch our souls with your words... we are all lifted out of the ordinary.

Thank you, Sharyn. Your words could not have been more perfect today. Today I will work harder. I will also say a prayer for Shaye.

Like many others, I am drawn to this blog everyday to check on the wellbeing of someone I have never met, yet feel I know. Today, as I drove around my own hometown, I thought immediately of you Sharyn -our local farmstand had a huge sign out front declaring "HARDY MUMS." From one mother to another, continued prayers. Your courage is inspiring. Your honesty is a gift to all us mothers of sons and daughters of a certain age...Wellfleet has given us many beautiful gifts over the years, but none so beautiful as the love shown to Caleb by his family, friends and community. Continued blessings and healing to Caleb and all who love him!

Sharyn,
So glad to hear Caleb continues to do better! If anyone can dazzle the judge it's you! Just turn on that charm and use your caring, thoughtful and courageous words which keep us reading the blog religiously! You go Mumsie!
You all continue to be in our thoughts and prayers daily...we'll have an extra prayer for Shaye!
God Bless you all!
Lots of love from Miami.

www.shipwreckbeads.com might be able to help...I also have tons of beads that I will look through tonight......
I can't wait to see you and give you a big gigantic hug! Of course you will dazzle the judge...unless he is deaf and blind! Hope not on that one. good luck to shaye......amy stj

Sharyn,

My only fear of you at the court house Tuesday is that you will probably have the judge convinced to let free all the people in Massachusetts jailhouses!

Best of luck,

Sharyn, I hope the hearing goes well. Let's hope this is an example of law tempered by compassion and true justice. And I hope you had your nails done in a bright shade of red! Glad to hear Caleb's condition is more stable. We will be back in Wellfleet for Labor Day weekend and look forward to once again feeling the spirit of the place and dropping all our loose change into all the Caleb containers we pass.

I live in Boston and there's a bead store near my house. If you'd like, I could pick up some large beads and drop them off at the hospital tomorrow.

(I don't know you or Caleb, but I was in Wellfleet last weekend and I'd like to help).

Sharyn,

Enjoy your time back in Wellfleet. My thoughts and energy will be with you all in the circle and at Shayes hearing even though my body can not be.

Tomorrow, Tuesday morning, August 28th while the Moon is sinking low in the west before or during dawn you may get a chance to glimpse the total eclipse of the Moon.

Covered in shadow even if only for moments we can look at the gift of light in a new way once again. Out of the darkness a rebirth of sorts. I hope this new cycle brings about all the best things for Shaye, Caleb, The Potter/Lindsay family, all the friends I have met in Wellfleet through out the years, and everyone checking this blog. The web of love seems to just keep getting bigger and bigger. I miss you all!

Love,
Kim Harris

Sharyn,

I hope the judge has a good pair of sunglasses as I am sure that he/she will be blinded by the light that you bring into that room...candles lit, and mucho prayers going out to you, Shaye and Caleb tonight.

It's wonderful to hear that Caleb is progressing and in fact is bored...with all of the pain and anguish of the past weeks, it's great to hear that he is moving forward.

Besides the beads is there anything else we can send to help alleviate the boredom? (movies, music, simple games, art supplies?...)

Good luck tomorrow, go get'em, show that courtroom how it's done.

I can't imagine anyone believing that Shaye is responsible for this, especially someone meant to ensure that justice is served.
Hopefully the prayers won't be needed (though I will surely send mine just in case), and, hopefully, your spiritual and physical allure will be admired and appreciated (and even oogled over), but not neccessary!

I also hope that your visit to the circle filled your heart and soul with all the adoration and support from all those who love you and your family so much.

I bet you're going to have so many beads they'll be coming out of your ears pretty soon!

I will be sending positive thoughts, as always, but with a little extra oomph around two o:clock!

I will send out my most positive thoughts for all of you, as I do everyday. I was painting my living room yesterday, and as the roller spread color, my mantra came to me
to add rhythm: fight back, Caleb, fight back, Caleb, fight back, Caleb.....

If anyone can dazzle the judge it is you. We are praying for Caleb as always but for Shaye too today. Best of luck! You are an amazing strength. We feel blessed to share this twisting road with you all. So happy Caleb is turning the corner. We are all here waiting patiently for you to return with him. Sending you as much love as we can, the Rices

Hi Sharyn -
Please look conservative in the courtroom. They have no heart or feelings in there. I was in court (with my son) and they threw out a young man because he wore a red jacket. Believe me that red is not a court color! And suits, ties, conservative dress makes more of an impression. Just say - from expreience. Best of luck - Sylvia

Sharyn, Good luck to you and Shaye in court. If the judge has any human emotion at all he/she will see the amount of love and feel the size of this community in that court room! No worries my dear! It wil all be fine. We are making a trip to Wal-Mart this evening and I will have some beads for Caleb in the mail in the next few days! What a great idea to keep him focused. He is in very good hands while you are way, so walk right in that court room and do your thing! Your going to be great! Best of luck to Shaye and his family! We love you all!

BEADS...BEADS....BEADS....nobody needs to buy ANY...i have put together a colorful supply....more than he could even hope to use...spread them around the H after he's bored with them...i have more beads than GOD herself....it didn't even put a dent in my supply...i also rolled up lots of waxed linen in about 5 different colors that he can make necklaces out of....maybe he should have a booth at the oyster fest with his new craft...i also put a little drawer unit with about 20 drawers that the beads can be stored in...how does that work in the H if you all have to be suited up?
all my love, healing & justice flames will be pouring out of my heart all day...God VICTORY to Shaye...xoxoxoxod

You rock Deirdre.. I had a feeling you would give so kindly!!

that's my girl...deirdre DOES rock..
an alternative to any "punishment" that could plague shaye-zee might be credit and time served already for community service, because he is a community asset to our beloved fleet. if the court wants to push it, perhaps the community service aspect might be explored...say...talking to kids about wearing helmets. i think my next job may be designing helmets in the shape of viking hats and pirate tri-corners! not that safety was ever a factor in risk-taking with our kids around here!
(or they'd ever wear one of um..). see ya'll round town..and yes, in a moment of bidding insanity, i bought me a dinghy..wot the hell am i gonna do with that?!? put a pirate flag on it i guess and float around the hahbah......arrrrr oxoxo

Positive thought coming from Pa.
We will be praying for Shaye today, and as always Caleb and family.

Anonymous said...

For Shaye's own emotional health he might need to be punished, certainly not with time in jail but perhaps community service, talking to kids about the dangers that brought about the accident.

dear sharyn, I saw you last night at the juice and I was not sure weather to let you be or come over and comfort you with choclate cake. I want to respect your space because right now I cant imagine how you are feeling, you amaze me though, you really do. last night was power, full moon and mars in action, a time to reflect on yourself and to communicate your purpose. I love you lots and I pray for caleb harder then ever. I will never give up for a moment. my hopes are very high for him and even though the road is rocky, he is so full of life and power. his spirit will concor all of his body ailments, his soul is what will heal him. he has magic blooming inside him, adn caleb has a strong will, somtimes stubborn. but here is when bieng stubborn can actually come in handy. I'm proud of you for taking a break and gathering your strength, its good because, when you come back you will be able to inspire caleb to power up and get through this. when you are at one with your body mind and soul, its amazing how much it can reflect to others.... you are a powerfull healer for caleb sharon. much blessings to you and inspiration to keep raging on through this rough water. love emmy d

Thinking of you and Ellen, Caleb and Shaye today at 2:00pm especially.

As an OT, of course I have lots and lots of beads! I will send big ones now, and little ones later, when Caleb is ready for it. I will also send a DVD of (raw footage) films and stills of our wedding with many beautiful shots of the three glorious "Lords of the Oyster".
Lots of love,

Being from the Upper Cape, finding a pirate flag is impossible. Just a suggestion. For every $10.00 donation, the Cape Cod Five (each branch) should have a supply of flags to give out to the donor...

Thanks! Good luck today Sharyn and Shaye. J

I agree with the community aspect part of shayes retribution. However I believe that not only should the "wear your helmet" motto apply but furthermore..no hitching and no willing particapants. It goes both ways.

So!! I bet you all were wondering if there really IS a patron saint of pirates!! Well there is! His name is Saint Godric of Finchale. He was born in 1069, the oldest of three. Although he began his life quite pirate-y (boozin', fightin', chasing women, conning customers, etc), he converted to Christianity after learning about the life of Saint Cuthbert. St. Godric became a hermit: living in mud huts, subsisting on berries and nuts, wearing a stylin' hair shirt (hopefully combed, conditioned, and blown-dried 1st!). He also never wore shoes again, no matter the weather (out of respect for Christ's lowering himself to become human, according to the site). He worked for a long time at a hospital near Jerusalem. St. Godric became known for his prophecys, visions, and strong affinity with wild animals. He also wrote poetry in Medieval English! (so....filthy AND romantic! What more could one ask for?) He died at the extremely old age of 99, and is represented as a very old hermit dressed in white, kneeling, holding a rosary, with a stag beside him. Anyone seen such a vision walking the halls of MGH? I'm sure he's there in spirit, watching over Caleb and the rest!

Some were SHOCKED when I told them I'd be working today and not in court with Shaye. I figure the support of Caleb's hardworking and hard loving mother and father would be all the judge would need to drop all Shaye's charges. Besides, who lets hippies into the courtroom anyways?! :c) Love to Sharyn, Jan, kai, max, CALEB and especially Shaye today! Looking forward to good news at the prayer circle tonight. Back in 2000 I was also on the journey you are now taking only it was with my mother not my son. I know all the ups and downs you are going through. My end was not a happy one but it is a journey that brought me closer to my brothers and sister and one that I will never forget. I learned so much from it about myself and life. I wish you luck and love and prayers, they do work.
