On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Kai, Caleb and Max

Philippe, an old friend and former neighbor of Sharyn, Jan and the boys, just found this photo in an old album and sent it on to me. I thought you might like to see the boys in their younger years.
Thanks Philippe...

Sharyn-One of my earliest Potter memories was when Max and Mikey were newborns - our older kids were in preschool opposite years. Soon our kids would be together. Happy times watching them play, you always gorgeous. I was always awed by your magnetic smile, infectious laugh, slender figure, and stylish being that you are. Thanks for sharing.
Caleb- Glad to hear you're healing . Many more adventures to come I'm sure. ann m

When Jan leaves his sign off ch/dad - what does that mean? Signed an outsider happily looking in - (who is also buzzed after an Oktoberfest party in suburban New Jersey (but is FROM Massachusetts)and cannot go to bed before checking on Caleb at 12:45 am!) Wellfleet gets in one's system and does not leave. My familiarity with this blog all started back in early August...drove up from the in-law's in Harwich Port to spend the day with dear old friends in 'Fleet on Kendrick Ave (Ave? Street?!) for the umteenth time since 1985 and saw the sign - if I recall correctly - wooden with white letters on Route 6 at the light to take the left into town: "Pray for Caleb." - Now this mother of 3, 2 boys and a girl, 11, 8 and 5 - all towheads too, cannot complete her day without a quick check, which often turns into at least a half-hour on this sight. Anyway, back to ch/dad (??) - just wondering - also wonder - how is SHAYE?? - and heading to Oysterfest on Fri - heard today it can take an HOUR to get one mile on Rte 6 south after it?? Tell me this is not possible. Hope all is well at Spaulding - aforementioned in-law spent months there recovering from a massive stroke and has long since returned to the Cape to smell the salt air and feel the sun on his face. The Cape heals many maladies...but you all already know that. Goodnight...

Sharyn,

When I saw this picture of your beautiful boys, it brought me to your post of a few days ago, the day that the magnitude of the situation had a crushing weight. That might seems like a strange reaction to this picture that is full of happiness and light. But as a mom with kids 21 and 25 I often find myself thinking of them as they were at 1 or 3 or 6 or 10, flashes of images that seem like they happened a second ago. I haven't seen my son much in the last 4 months, school and such, and the other day I was feeling blue...couldn't put my finger on it...when it came to me that it is simple; I just miss him. He is well most of the time, he is making tough choices, he is growing up, he is doing what he needs to do, but I think of his beautiful little face and the way his cheek was smooth to touch...not so much now!!...and our talks over ice cream cones on the way to piano lessons every Tuesday, and on and on, and I miss him. So when I see the picture of your little boys, I can truly understand that sometimes you just miss Caleb and that the journey is long. That all being said, I have been reading the posts these past few days feeling like things are in a state of "new normal" especially when Caleb realized that the pain he was feeling was best expressed by what came to mind: "Mother****er" indeed! A true mother son moment; the real thing. Aah...I hope THAT boy continues to emerge little by little and that you also can continue to do well.

Ch/dad is Sky's father??

While I am asking. Where is Sky?
who is Settie? Is that Shaye's wife??? I am so close to this story but do not have all the players yet. I know she is the one with the beautiful voice at prayer circle. I was there a few times this summer on my vacation. Also is Jan actually pronounced YAWN???

prayers for all.

I wonder if people know you can click on "other" and type in your name only and then "publish your comment" and it will say "your name said..." of course it is O.K. to be anoymous too, if you like.

For Sharyn -
I have been spending parts of the summer on the cape all of my life - now nearly 50 years. About 7 or 8 years ago I was driving up route 6 with my kids - Hannah, now 21 and Liam, 19 (they'd have been 15 and 12 or so at the time) and we spied this fabulous looking group of people gardening outside a bank (I think) by the side of the road. There was this tall, blonde woman in overalls and 3 beautiful blonde boys who were all clearly related. We were smitten on the spot and commented about the loveliness of mom and boys and garden. On our way home from P-town later in the same day we stopped in Wellfleet for art and ice cream and again crossed paths with the beautiful gardeners. We have been referring to this group ever since as the "Wellfleet boys" - they have become for all of us a symbol of the way life can look and they come up in conversation whenever thoughts turn - for us more and more frequently - to the possibility of making the Cape our permanent home. I'm a single mom - have been for a while now - and this mystery woman surrounded by her boys has been a huge part of my consciousness for all these years - a living picture of loving and working beside your children. I follow a blog written by a woman who calls herself "blackbird." She and her family spend a week in Wellfleet every summer and this summer she happened to be there just after Caleb's accident. She referred to Caleb and posted a link in her blog to yours. I followed that link and as I read and scrolled back to the earlier posts all of the little hairs on my body began to stand on end. I realized that you are 'our' Wellfleet mother and Caleb, Max and Kai are 'our' Wellfleet boys and I felt, and continue to feel, an overwhelming connection to you. I've come to the conclusion of late that there really are only, at the very most, 2 degrees of separation between us all - not 6 - and I need you to know that even though we've never met - and most likely never will - you and your children have become an integral part of my little family and you are in our thoughts and in our hearts daily.
I'm certain that with time and the immense support you're receiving from friends, family and community your Caleb will return home to pick up where he left off and complete the circle of love and connectivity that's just waiting for him. Please know that you and yours have been a shining bright spot for me and mine for years.

Love to you all - Susan.

My thanks to Kim and Philippe for finding this treasure and for your sharing it with us all. Your boys are precious then, as they are now, and always will be.

I continue working on Caleb, and if you'd like will forward results of his sessions. He is improving....I will write you more specifics.

Be well, and enjoy this beautiful weather..am in Boothbay Harbor doing house work...got a chance to see Kim before she left for vacation.

Please know you are all never far from thought...

Blessings,

What a sweet surprise to see those little faces!

As another outsider who reads this, I got a kick today of all the posts asking about who is who.

Some days I too want to know everyone here, trying to piece it all together. It is amazing on the days where there is finally a little moment of revelation, like the day Judith posted and gave a face to so many earlier comments by him and his wife Nicole.

Being an outsider on this blog is like watching a Polaroid develop, with each incredible person being revealed on their own time.

When I first started reading this, I kept Caleb in my prayers every day, but as time has gone on, my prayers have been expanded to include everyone else here. I am again and again inspired by the warmth, generosity, and kindness, even if I'll never know any of you.

Love to all today! And as always, to Caleb XO

I remember those boys with their mom gardening, they haven't changed a bit, and I think mom looks younger now.

It is funny to see other people asking the same questions that I have. I never asked because I didn't want to intrude. The Fleet kind of has its own crew, and they might not want to share all the little pieces with us, and that is ok. Beside Deidre has lived there for how long now and still can't put all the pieces together, so how could we ever online? (said with a huge smile)
Love and prayers as always
