On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Graduation

Up and rolling - off to Western MA. for Kai's graduation. Caleb, Max and I are so excited and the element of cheerfullness and expectation has permeated our hearts for the past couple of days.
When Caleb graduated from high school, he was given a standing ovation from his peers. Caleb suffered in school. ( It wasn't till he reached the water's edge that he found his element.) Caleb needed more credits at the last minute and he struggled as it was...so when he walked across the stage all hell broke loose. He had by then also cultivated his cowyboyish charms and disarms, and even his teachers could not help themselves..... they too joined in the clamor.

Kai was given a standing ovation from his peers and faculty at the Stockbridge School awards dinner. He struggled with his final year as well. First his beloved brother suffered an injury and then 2 months prior to graduation , his father dies. Kai carries a 3.9 grade average through all of this.

As I recall when Caleb graduated.. no one in the crowd was louder than Kai, who is usually reserved. At Kai's graduation it was Caleb who climed the rock wall and perched himself higher than anyone so he could be the most obvious supporter for Kai.

I have a feeling we will all be sitting in the scaffolding this time around.

Thanks for being with us through all the ups and downs ..and the falling and all the climbing out again. Such is life!

Please, as Caleb would want ...extend your comments to Kai today.

Congratulations, Kai, on a very well deserved and courageous accomplishment. I marvel at your ability to focus on your studies, maintain a fantastic grade point average and graduate with your class given the demands of this past year.

You are loved by your family, and your unselfish and abundant presence in their lives this year meant everything to them.

Enjoy your graduation and all that you have accomplished. Best wishes to you for all that lies ahead.

Congrats to you Kai! We don't need to know each other for me to know that you have incredible strength, determination and character. You were handed a year that NOBODY should EVER have to experience, and I hope you can smile and feel tremendous pride in yourself.
Somebody who can do as you have, been there for your brother, your Mom, your whole family, AND managed to stay YOUR OWN course.....well, Kai - the sky is the limit for you in life.
I attended my HS freshman son's National Honors Society Awards last night - a great speaker said,
"you're genes determine your apptitude, YOU determine your altitude".....I love it - it's so true - it's all up to us.....take it high Kai - you've got what it takes!!

I'm proud of you and I don't even KNOW you!!

I wish you peace, happiness and a life you love-

Congratulations Kai! I remember when you were at MassArt, and got to see you in Boston I wish struck by how you were determined to get what you wanted out of college, and it sounds like you've done just that at Stockbridge. You've got such a strong character and we're proud to be a friend of yours.

Pogo said, long ago, "On some people you don't need to read the label." This is true with Kai. Right away you know that this is someone who is thoughtful, insightful, creative. Kai's design's around Town are most impressive; I'm thinking of a stone pattern around a hot tub in particular. He radiates trust and clarity. Kai reads a lot which gives him, maybe, his organizational sense. His couple of contributions to the blog were beautifully and perfectly done with a beginning, middle, and end. One can't say that for all of us! We can be grateful that he's decided to stay around Town for a while and be an example of academic excellence, hard-work, and personal integrity for younger people.

Hey Kai,
I have thought a lot about you...and I am in awe that you have been able to "keep all of the balls in the air" over the past 10 months. To maintain conccentration, focus, travelling back home on weekends, living on your own, girlfriend etc...and then to graduate a with such an impressive result, simply awesome. Most people would have taken a year or a semester off. It speaks volumes to your sense of courage and determination. Congratulations! I am really proud of you - even if it makes me feel old to be saying that. Enjoy the moment, celebrate, and appreciate those around you (I know you do).

On a recent visit with Kai, Max and Sharon I asked expectantly “Is everyone going out for the graduation?!” Max sort of shrugged modestly and Sharon exclaimed “ Yes of course- with bells and whistles!” or something of that nature. To which Kai responded “You know it’s funny everyone who asks me about it says they’re coming and they’re so excited – it’s such a big deal- you’d almost think nobody from Wellfleet had ever even graduated” To which we all had a good chuckle. Yes, we all know that’s not really so – there’ve been plenty of graduates and stories of success from this small hamlet. And there have even been heroic graduates who have struggled against many odds. Somehow the difficult odds, like sharp jagged rocks, for you Kai, were picked up and carried by you and rubbed smooth, with thoughtful worry about others and contemplation about what matters in life and come back to us like softly glistening jewels that can be seen in your steady, mindful approach. Not everyone, in fact very few, walk the path that you and your family walk, with such grace. It is truly our honor to wish you the blessings of the day – your day- to be proud and jubilant – upon your Graduation, Kai. Caleb, Max & Sharon please give a few whoops for those of us there in spirit with you.
Fondly,
Anne & Family

I stopped by Lecounts on Sunday morning at 6:45 am to check on the surf...Kai was in the water already, getting barrel after barrel after barrel. No doubt he applied the same commitment to his schooling, as his academic performance shows. As for graduation, impressive all around. Well done, dude, and it only took seven years! You must have really liked it to stretch it out for so long. Bravo!!!

FELICITACIONES KAI!

I am so glad that I got to meet you and put arms around you at your home last month. You were so sweet to show this "old" lady a very genuine tenderness when I asked you all those UMass questions...as Mari and I are in Greenfield. What an amazing job your've done, coming through the storm with flying colors...you are an amazing young man! Your family, and all here, are extremely proud of all you've accomplished!

Be Happy and have some FUN! You deserve it!

The very best to you Kai, now and forever. You deserve nothing but the best and your accomplishments are outstanding.

Sharyn,
There is a wonderful and very interesting book entitled: A Year of Magical Thoughts by Joan Didion. My young friend who lost her husband a few months ago gave it to me to read and I found it to be very enlightening. Maybe the Library has it. Anyway if you do find it I hope you find it as informative as I did. It's not a "Self Help" or anything of that nature.

You must be very proud of Kai---he did great!

Best wishes and an abundance of hugs to all.

Penny
