“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are messengers of overwhelming grief...and unspeakable love.” -Washington Irving

Thank you to Carolyn for the image of the Buddhist knot (symbolizing eternal love)...to Susannah for the photos of Sarah and Jan...and to Althea for the photo of the boys in Boston last summer/fall.
Thank you Sky, with much love, Sarah
Thank you for the beautiful message of tears and the lovely family pictures. With love, Nicole
Dear Sky....What beautiful images to behold. It reminds me how many lives are touched by Jan's passing, and reminds me that the occassion on the 20th is about a celebration of LIFE. Those images are full of everything good about life and the company of those you love.
Thank you to Carolyn, for sharing the Buddist knot, to Susannah for the beautiful pictures of Jan and Sarah, and to Althea for the photos of Caleb, Max and Kai from last year....it means so much (for those of us who have never actually met these families) to "connect" in this way.
To the dear ones on the Cape, please know that are thoughts and prayers remain constant...
Peace.....
Melinda

Thinking of you all and sending
Big Love -

What a beautiful page today, Sky. Thank you.
I am always at a loss for words here, but I wanted to express my gratitude to the family and Sarah for the article in today's Times. I lost a grandfather to suicide last year and what you have shared will be such a gift and lifesaver to many. To share something so private and to reach out to help others at such a painful time is deeply generous. No words for it. Bless you all, and much love.
WOW....I am continually in "aw" of your special community.......I feel fortunate to have been touched by it as well. My prayers and thoughts continue daily for Caleb and his family. I read every single word of the article about Jan today in your newspaper. For some odd reason I feel I must file it away and remember to be "extra" aware of those around me. It is is tough world out there......
I'll miss you Jan, seeing you at the beach and around town with your fine sons and family, working your but off every day ,you're at peace now, your friends will try to live with memories of you with your family , condolences to you Sharon and the boys, Sincerly,PeterK
What a wonderful and insightful article about Jan. Especially for those who never had the chance to know him, it really helps to paint a fuller picture of the man and how he was struggling with the demons of depression. I don't think there are many families in this country that have not been touched by depression. I know that mine has. It is tragic, and it is so important for people to be aware and be sensitive to its effects.
Wonderful photos. Thanks so much for sharing them.

Thanks to the photographers (and also to Nate Johnson for all the great photos he's posted) but particularly to Sky for the service she's rendered to so many of us here, and to the whole Town. The CCT article was sensitively and thoughtfully done and reminds us how men are channeled into being out of touch with ourselves, and capable of being overwhelmed. This is, as is obvious, a deadly business, and is as much a result of sexism as the harm done to women.

I just want to say how amazing your family is. You serve as inspiration to anyone who has lost someone in their lives, and i truely admire that. I wish you all the best.
"our hearts are heavy and light"
"...overwhelming grief and unspeakable love..." The photos mirror the unspeakable love shared amongst this extended family. We can only pray that peace will one day accompany the overwhelming grief. Our hearts ache for yours.

Thank you so much for all of the pictures. Words fail us at times, but know that if we could all be there, we would do so. Our hearts go out to all of you affected by Jan's passing.
Depression is an insidious thing; it makes us recoil, when we should reach out.
Love to all Fleetians, in body and in spirit.

The spray of the sea is its tears. Tears of sorrow….tears of immense joy…..tears of despair…..tears of understanding
The sea weeps for Sarah….for Jan’s children……for his loving family…..for his caring friends……for those who knew him…..for those who hadn’t yet the chance……
The sea weeps for Jan….in sorrow for his pain…..in joy of welcoming him home.
Wonderful pictures, wonderful article in the Times. For those of us who were yet to know Jan, they add even more depth and understanding.
Peace and good thoughts to all.
All these pictures are beautiful but the one i love the most is the top one of sarah and jan, there is just something about the two of them in that picture that makes you smile. Maybe ill have the pleasure of meeting this beautiful woman that stole Jan's heart, someday.
See you soon.

Dedicated to Jan :
I hope you are sailing on a dream
of a crystal clear ocean Jan.

To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean,
to ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and living,
in search of the answers of questions unknown
To be part of the movement and part of the growing,
part of beginning to understand,
Aye Calypso the places you've been to,
the things that you've shown us,
the stories you tell
Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit,
the men who have served you so long and so well
Hi dee ay-ee ooo doo-dle oh
oo do do do do do doo-dle ay yee
doo-dle ay ee
Like the dolphin who guides you, you bring us beside you
To light up the darkness and show us the way
For though we are strangers in your silent world
To live on the land we must learn from the sea
To be true as the tide and free as a wind swell
Joyful and loving in letting it be
Aye Calypso the places you've been to,
the things that you've shown us,
the stories you tell
Aye Calypso, I sing to your spirit,
the men who have served you so long and so well
Hi dee ay-ee ooo doo-dle oh
oo do do do do do doo-dle ay yee

he dee Ay-ee
Hi dee oh ooo

hi dee oh ooo
you are a beautiful family, shining with something seperate, greater than the physical.
thank you for reminders..
