On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

checking in.....

Sorry to be so tardy about updates but in reality it takes much more enegy to have Caleb home and we have a full schedule from the time we wake till the moon casts it's shawdow...we are busy!
Jenny, Max and Kai are just impossible not to love - they are here with Caleb everyday plugging away with enthusiasm and vigor..- Jenny uses books from Aunt Carol's stash (years as a special needs teacher) to prompt Caleb's speech and it is really improving...Kai and Max do a workout ( Max always calls me Richard when I butt in and correct a movement) . They take long walks with the newly improved waistlined dog and sometimes our weird cat . Shaye and Cedar come by to help lift his spirits and Jan pops in as well. Aunt Carol supplies us with meatloaf, bananna bread and comfort.
So to give a brief run-down...Caleb is almost back to par with where we left off in terms of speech..Physically he is strong and with the help of ur new favorite friends at RICH, he will continue to improve. His head remains scrambled but if you can excuse my French, he can tell me -" I'm all fucked up mom "- which lets me know that at least he can remember where it is he wants to get to and that leaves so many possibilities. We are held captive by his charm and wit and his positive attitude.
All is well at the homestead.
We are committed to Caleb and as I have done for 25 years--I will watch over him from the moment he was conceived till the moment I can no longer....
We appreciate your watchful eye as well.

How amazing you are to keep us updated with everything going on -- and what great news. We are all so happy to hear that things are going along well with the new routines. Emily Dickinson once wrote it was so "startling to live" that she hardly had time for anything else! I'm sure we can all relate in some way. Thanks for always reminding us to appreciate every moment we're given. Sending you (and Peg, and all the friends out there) peace, Lisa K.

No need to apologize for tardy updates! So happy to hear Caleb's back on track - He's got an amazing support system in you, Jennie, Kai, Max and all the incredible people who have come together to help in Caleb's recovery.

All the Best!

Hi Sharyn. Glad to hear that Caleb and the rest of you are doing well and adjusting back in at home where you all belong. I've excused your French(with MY mouth how can I not?? Haha)and certainly am with you in that, that is a good thing for him to say because he realizes when he is struggling and can and will work towards improvement. Awareness is key. It is and has been a long hard road but injuries such as this take a long time to heal so be patient...good things come to those who wait. It was very nice to see you the other night, besides the circumstances(rediculous)and that we didn't really get to converse but I was happy to see you nonetheless...You looked well and your spunky blonde self which I was happy to see after all you have been through lately...But us Fleetians are fighters and I see you have made it through. Best wishes for continued progress and mucho mucho healing. Take Care,
Corey

Ah, would that we were all so perceptive as to observe now and then, "I'm all f*&ked up." This utterance from Caleb does indeed suggest all kinds of possibilities. Thanks for updating your admiring public. Good wishes for all of you.

Oh good---I was getting a little antsi but Amystj has been keeping me posted with as much as she knows. It all sounds good and positive and healthy. I love Caleb's remark in reference to himself---he is amazing and his sense of humor won't quit.

I will be a way from the computer for a couple of days(off)however my continued positive thinking and praying remains in effect. Bless all of you. Great hugs---and love. Penny on St.John

Excuse me french when I say to Caleb "You go, you mother fucker..." Sorry.. to those I may offend, but Caleb is one to put emphasis in his words, and has never been shy to say such things, therefor him saying what he said to Mumsie makes me smile assuredly.

Bless you all that have graced Leb with your presence, I only wish Chema and I were closer to show up!! Moldy Masterson sends it's love Yellowbeard! But for real, I am sure it makes Caleb glow to see you all.. keep the visits coming when allowed, & prayers and positive thoughts are key! Be well, bless.. xo, Miss Clance

No fretting about tardiness, sounds like you have MORE than enough going on up there! But, it is really good hearing the good news. After seeing pictures of the "characters" and "setting" at New Years - I can visualize so much clearer what is going on! You have no idea how much your story has inspired me and my own quests in life. Thank you! Becky

Your news is so encouraging; lots of help, lots of progress, lots of motivation. It is very hard work, what you are doing, all of this rebuilding, but the rewards go beyond words. I still hold hope in my heart for Caleb's continuing progress...the stars and beyond are the limit!
Keep up the fight, Caleb! You are a wonder!
As always, with hope,

Sharyn,

I am SO GLAD you are bilingual and can speak French. It is such a romantic language to know that gives such true feeling to words! My second lanquage is Pig Latin...You are all uckedfup Arynsha! See what I mean, your French just sounds sooo much better! What do you think Arynsha? Esya or ixsna...

Oh Sharyn- I've lost count of the times I have read your words and found myself in tears. You are so inspiring- your commitment to your kids gives me strength.
Katy Weeks and I are departing for Costa Rica and Panama on Monday to visit with Nicole and to soak up the warm tropical days and nights. I will be thinking of you all along the journey- maybe a little Caribbean Pirate Magic Midnight Fire Prayer is in order?!
I love you forever.

How wonderful that Caleb knows himself well enough to know he's all fucked up - it bodes well for his progress, I think! Thanks for the update - I think we all assume that no news is good news, but it's still so nice to hear your voice. Please know that we're always wishing you the best. We'll continue to keep Caleb in our thoughts and prayers, like you, 'til we can no longer.....

Big Love -
Susan

P.S. - and really, isn't "all fucked up" just relative anyway?

Since we seem to have a pass on using French... the Jersey kid in me feels obliged to chime in with a hearty "Fuckin' Aye"!!!!!

Thank you, thank you for taking the time to post an update. As for the possibilities... they're unlimited. It's all a matter of time (and continuing hard work and patience.)

Still thinking of you daily... and wishing you all the best.

The watchful eyes are here. You should know by now that our thoughts are with you often, that though we are always looking for updates the last thing that you should feel obligated to say is sorry. We have been guests along your journey and that of Caleb and your family and you have been so gracious in letting us come along and share.

It is always wonderful to hear that Caleb is making such good progress. I think that it brings a smile to all of us in blog-land and warms our heart.

Your schedule sounds quite full with many willing and dedicated members of the crew. During times of major challenges the glue that holds together “families” sometimes gets stronger and it sounds like your broad family glue is Liquid Weld. Caleb sounds like he is quite determined and that seems to make you all even more determined. I have long had a sense that Caleb’s spirit runs quite deep yet it also dances on the surface.

I hear quite a lot in your post ……determination, strength, acceptance, resilience, great team work and a base level of fatigue. Caleb sounds like he is doing his dambdist and, as has already been said, his recognition of what is going on and not connecting, gives him even more opportunity to advance. I do hope that you will all take the time to have discussions about preventing burnout. It is clear that this pace of giving takes much out of everyone and it is so important that in this giving that the external springs that feed and replenish your individual wells continue to be fed. As usual all the best….

Just want to echo what Jeff said. You should never apologize or feel obligated to post. Yes, we all want to know how you are doing, but I think we also do not want to be a burden or be intrusive. I have the blog on my Google "feed" so I know when there is a new post. I will always want to know how you are all doing, but I also sort of tell myself now, "No news is good news."

All the best,
Amy from western MA
