On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Rich

So the very first and most important order of business is to wish my Sky a Happy Birthday. I spent a lot of $$$$ on something with very little fabric -- so make sure you ask Sky to show it off !
Just returned from MGH for a final CAT scan prior to our departure - Caleb lost his breakfast in the transport and I am reminded of how very fragile he still is. So on that note... we will indeed be passing through Town Lawn - but most likely will be staying in the van - and I will be asking all of you to stay at a distance to wave and to call out your well wishes for him. This will more than likely be a draining enough for him -- so many physical and emotional changes in one day. The rest of the day we will be spent situating Caleb and myself into home! To better understand the seriousness of wanting peace and quiet for that day - I have ask that even Jenny not come by (and bless her heart, she understands.) We will be in touch beyond that when I have had time to make out a schedule which will allow all of you in.
Yes - we are excited beyond belief!!!
As my stay at Spaulding comes to an end, I have been reflecting on this journey called life. I was talking with a friend who was saying to me " You never know - this is so hard for you - life is so......" and at that point she was at a loss for words. My dear friend Ellen W, who was standing next to me chimed in with "rich". Life is soooooo rich. And isn't it! Mumsie

Dear Caleb, My thoughts have been with you all along this journey of yours. I was reminded by my mother of a halloween when you were about 3 and came to her house with Linette for trick or treat and my mother asked Linette to climb up in her lap and give her a kiss and when she was done you said, can I give you one too? and you climbed up and planted one on her. She's still in love with you to this day. Had her 80th birthday this summer. Every time I see her she says hows that sweet boy Caleb doing and I tell her he'll be around to give out lots of kisses soon. I will be there sat. and everyday to cheer you on.

Here's a big PS for November Sky
I was sitting at Mayo beach this morning. I walk every morning now and write some while I have my coffee sitting on the edge of the wooden walkway watching the shellfishermen work their grants. Today as I wrote the date Nov 1, 2007 I was immediately reminded of you. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!NOVEMBER SKY" You were born not a mile from here as the crow flies. I remember getting the call and going out into the crisp November morning to hold and gaze upon a small wonder. That name serves you so well. It sings.
The yurt(sp?) that day was a warm and welcoming space. I remember it well crawling in to find a spot of to the side of the earth mother Ann with all the moms cooing and oohing and ahhing that this new bundle had arrived just this morning. The warm glow in that place was magical. The perfect nest.
Watching you grow and mature into this wonderful woman that is SKY is such an honor. Love Carrie

As I was thinking of you, I was reminded of a post from awhile ago. May continued happiness and joy meet you along your journey.

Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,
you have already come;
’Tis Grace has brought you safe thus far,
And Grace will lead you home.

This morning, driving my daughter to school, it was pretty quiet in the car. I guess we were both a little groggy from Trick or Treats... She spoke just one sentence on the way there. "Caleb Potter goes home in two days." We live far from Wellfleet, have never met Caleb or his family. We aren't a "religious" family. But we have been praying for Caleb for months, all of us, my daughter's grandma, aunts, cousins, all of us who were together in Welfleet in July. Caleb, you are in the hearts of many people, your triumph has touched us all. God bless you as you make that journey home. Two days.....and HOME.

Yesterday I stopped by St. Patrick's Cathedral and lit a candle for Caleb - in front of an image of Christ. Since I moved here years ago from Duxbury, MA, I have done this. I will be thinking of you all day Saturday and wishing I could be on the green in Fleet to cheer. Perhaps I wil have an oyster to celebrate. Wishing you a happy journey home. Best, Nancy in New York City

Safe travels and happy homecoming to you both!!! It will be so nice to know you are here within hugging distance. I'm sure we can all manage to follow visitation schedules and whatnot, even though I'm pretty sure that there is some rule in the pirate code about not following rules...but doesn't that cancel itself out? :) Everyone is so willing to do whatever it takes for caleb to be home, healthy, whole and happy. Shannon and I have been brainstorming to come up with some games and activities for caleb to do with us. Wait till you hear about "Tittie Toss". You'll love it! he he he.
I can't wait to stand on that lawn with all of caleb's loved one's and friends, and know that he will be right there with us in a matter of minutes. We all spent so much time standing there, holding eachother up and wishing for this homecoming to be. AND HERE WE ARE!!! YEAH!!!! It has been a long, long road since the 4th of July. I can't wait to see where we end up next. love to all... amystj

So much of life's richness is like a nugget tucked in the middle of the pain. Our worst fears, when realized, can become our most treasured teachers.

You will need time to listen to the sounds and breathe the smells of that beautiful place. Everyone of us who have followed your journey will have a special Thanksgiving indeed.

Dear Sharyn,Jon and all Potters,
Have been keeping up on the recovery road all along and let it be known "Rich" is perfect for describing life with our children. I am driving up early from NY on Sat. hoping to be part of the Welcome Home for Caleb. I have always thanked my children for helping me rediscover myself when I had to get through tough times with child related experiences. But Sharyn, from reading all the entries on this site since July you have the manual down for publication, A Survival Journal of a Pirate's Mother with Red Revelon Lips!
Coming home will speed Caleb's recovery. Our best to you all!

Hi Sharyn,

First off, Happy Birthday November Sky! Sharyn, would you like my sizes for when my Birthday comes? You could spend just a few $$$ on a lot of fabric if that works....No! I don't need another tent!

I will reiterate a point made numerous times here that you have made many people feel rich here. Something good came from something bad for sure here... The great news is Caleb is doing tremendous and your both coming back home! It's quite obvious to me in your tone the excitement you feel. I am sure if you or Caleb said "Help!" there would be a stampede to your door! To all the people who read this blog and don't know you and your family they are missing a rare treat in life that enrichens my soul... Just click those heels or cowboy boots or whatever the Hell your wearing and you'll be home soon!

Caleb, Sharyn, family and fabulous Fleeters,....I can barely contain my joy as I fumble to find words of gratitude to all of you and whatever powers exist that have guided you (and us) through this journey. Since our annual summer visit, which includes our children, grandchildren, and according to my husband anyone we happen to meet on our way to Fleet, we have followed your recovery. I have tried to offer words of encouragement in the dark hours and still respect your privacy. I can only hope you've received as much as you've given.
....We were lucky enough to be in Wellfleet for Oysterfest and the following week (a decompression retreat just for the two of us) and the townsfolk were all so open to discussing their love for you all. Thank you for that. As we were leaving to return home and I was starting to feel sorry for myself that we didn't live there (can't afford it), my cell phone kept ringing with soulful pleas from grandchildren to please hurry and I began to be anxious to be home to the blessed clutter of it all. So, yes life is rich and wonderful and startling and home is the place where you're surrounded by people who love you. I'm so happy you'll be home where you can be encircled by those who love you so much. Thank you for pointing out the obvious to us all. And thank you for sharing your fears and doubts with us. That was very brave. But you have allowed us to be a part of something miraculous. Thank you for that....Caleb, you are fierce and adorable, the best combination. Sharyn, you are powerful and wise and so eloquent. Thank you for sharing your mother's heart.
Finally, I manage an independent book store in my hometown of Schenectady and maybe when normalcy turns to boredom (does that ever happen?), you may be interested in talking to someone about putting this in print.
I'll be picturing the town lawn and all of you lovely people on Saturday as you welcome home your pirate. Many blessings and peace.

hi to everyone from across the globe...
we've been lighting butter lamps at various stupas and monasterys across kathmandu in prayer for caleb...i told sky i would try and send some photos and am still working on it.

but more importantly i'm so happy to hear you're all heading home!! i would be there for the big arrival if i could!
everyone here who i've told caleb's story to has been following the updates along with the rest of us..they send their best wishes as well.
the last image of caleb i have in my mind is him and kai sitting on the deck of JP's boat at the blessing of the fleet and i remember thinking i should go over and sit with them but in the midst of all the fun never did.
next time for sure!

and sharyn, i don't think we've ever met 'officially', but my first impression of you was at sky's bday a few years ago at your house and you gave her a fantastic pair of undies that were so jangly and ornate that i'm sure you're not really supposed to wear clothes over them - they were great!!! sky is lucky to have people like you all in her life.
happy birthday sky!

Sharyn -

For months now you and Caleb and your magnificent extended family have made my life richer without lifting a finger - just knowing that you're all real and safe and that you and your boy are just a matter of hours from home has filled my coffers to overflowing!

Hugs and kisses and fingers crossed for a smooth journey on Saturday....to you and yours from me and mine,

Home at last, home at last, thank God you'll be home at last! The comfort of home is the best medicine there is. Years ago when my chocolate lab, Kona, was sooooo sick with pancreatitis.....she almost died......spent three weeks in "intensive" care at Roberts Animal hospital in Hanover.......the doctors said she would probably live 3 to 6 months due to what they thought was a tumor and sent me home with her; packed with IV fluids, anti nausea meds, prescription food, etc......she was skinny, lethargic and weak......I was told to keep her quiet and on a short leash. Well, Kona always loved the water and the beach....I mean jump up and down, turn a 360 in the air, dive in the water, roll in the sand kind of love.....so on the way home from the hospital I drove into Lecounts so she could get her first whiff of the ocean.....for the first time in weeks she perked right up....she actually had a smile on her doggy face.....so I decided to take her to the waters edge.....she dragged me down the dune so I let her off leash...she strolled into the water and just swam around in circles with a bigger smile on her face....came out and rolled and rolled in the sand....she was home......her recovery was quick....she was home....she still needed the IV's and meds but, she was home....that was four years ago....not only is she alive....but doing great.....she is home.....when Caleb gets home....you'll see the smile....he still has a lot of work to do but, he is home....recovery is remarkable when you're where you're "supposed" to be......welcome home, my friends....be well.....love, jodi

I think it's rather appropriate that Caleb and Sharyn blow back home on the crest of a hurricane! How else could it possibly be?
--Paula M.

Well it isn't going to be a hurricane by the time it gets here, but if they are right, 50 to 75 mile an hour wind gusts and power outages might not make it the best day for traveling.

Hello There!
I work in the Health Department and there was an issuance from MEMA sent to us about this storm. We dont usually get those unless this storm will pretty much be damaging to some extent! I dont know if you will want people sitting on the lawn in that weather. MEMA says there could be gusts up to 90mph and heavy rains (maybe flooding depending on tides). So im just wondering if we will all sit out there still? I want to be there but i dont know if want to be there when a gust of 90mph wind comes roaring through. Let me know!!
