On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

Hurricanes can't stop us!

I agree with Paula - it is very appropriate that we blow in with the winds --- I was going to take my broom, but this is far better.
It is a sad day for me in truth..saying goodbye to my Hospital family is difficult. These people who have come to know us pretty well and who now are among the many who count themselves in with the rest of the Caleb fans will be missed terribly. They are a dedicated bunch - smiles on their faces when we are down, encouraging words always on the tips of their tongues, a warm hug at the end of a long day. You will be meeting some of them who we have convinced that they are true Fleetians at heart. Kristi will never leave after she shows up - and that is part of our masterful plan.. Tonight Kai, Max, Jan and I will throw a party like no other this re-hab has had!
We are celebrating........now I know that it might be wet and a bit uncomfortable tomorrow around 12:30 - but come on - when did a little hurricane stop you? --- do you remember Kai's 21st birthday celebration? Trees falling down, snow blowing sideways, electrical lines down sparking the roads, lights out, a veritable blizzard.........but all of you trudged through the snow from town down roads that were closed. Chad arrived with Pizza's from his restaurant - we had live music by candlelight and one of the best parties I can remember!!!
Fleetians - get your rubbers out!!!!!! Mumsie

I think heading back to Fleet through a Nor'easter or post-hurricane or whatever it is going to be falls under the heading of not being afraid to "rough it up good", which I think I remember as a Caleb-ism from early on when I joined this blog.....Anyway, the only thing that will stop me from being there right at 12:30 will be a previous commitment to drive a friend recovering from major surgery to an appointment she has, but if that goes as planned and I put petal to the metal I should be able to sail down to Fleet in my little Scion by 12:30-ish--maybe faster if I catch headwinds!

Timmy--I will look for you--not sure if I can be at Town Hall by 12:30 but I will do my best...

Jodi B, I loved the story of your dog...they teach us so much! My own lab mix was just diagnosed with cancer last week, so we are facing a medical journey with her, but as was said earlier on this blog, on the path of such painful journeys there is always a nugget to be gleaned.

Hope to cheer your arrival in person tomorrow, Caleb and Sharyn, and rock out this evening! I bet Spaulding will never be the same, and I know there will be a void there after you guys leave.

sounds like you're going to be arriving in typical Sharyn and Caleb fashion, always with a big hurrah! Can't wait to see you guys again,

Caleb, Sharyn, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and fellow pirates... What a step in the journey. I have followed for months (from a distance) without ever commenting (a little shy) but always inspired by the love, courage and honesty that poured forth here. I think the positive vibes have been so healing for so many. The soulfulness (is that a word?) that seems to be Caleb and his crew is a sight to behold! Thank you for sharing yourselves. Continued healing vibes your way.

I will be sending all sorts of crazy Caleb-love from afar!

Sounds like a blast tomorrow, only wish I could be there. I think this storm should be renamed Caleb as it comes up the coast....I'm sure it will forever be known on Fleet as Caleb's storm.
Be there in spirit...sending hugs and kisses and tears of joy.
Peace and love

peace, love and light from my family to yours as you head home.

The storm is appropriately named. Noel means Christmas, and I can't think of a better Christmas gift to Wellfleet than the safe return of Caleb to it's beautiful shores. Wave your Pirate Flags high and REJOYCE - Caleb's home!

I'm sure everyone at the hospital are sad to see you go too but wish the best for Caleb and his speedy recovery back to normalcy.

Is this shin-dig tomorrow all local Fleetians and only his close friends? I don't want to stand out as an outsider amongst all his buds, you know?

I've been through many a hurricane in my day....a few of them were Cat.5's and I am DEFINATELY not afraid of some piddly little Nor'easter that decided to come by and welcome Yellowbeard home. Come to think of it, the weather was crazy for quite a few days after the 4th of July...electrical storms and haziness and such. Seems fitting for Caleb to blow right into town with the whole fam damily at his side. Too bad about the broom idea, but I'm sure you will find another time for that Sharyn.
I think anyone who wants to should be on the lawn...should be quite the adventure. Anxiously awaiting your arrival...me xoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Safe trip, good home coming....will be sending extra thoughts of healing tomorrow.

May the roads rise to meet you.
May the winds be at your back.
May the sun (eventually) shine warm upon your face; The rain fall soft upon your fields And, may God hold you in the palm of Her hand.
A GAELIC BLESSING (adapted)

Enjoy the party!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job MGH/Spaulding

Sharyn,
Was that the night that Chris, Caleb and I almost were stuck at your house overnight because of the bad storm and power outage??? I can't remember if that was a party night, or not. It was about 2 yrs ago now, because my Caleb was still an infant...So the timing seems about right. Your Family is always throwing such memerable parties that it's hard to decipher what party was what.

Oh, and "Hell Yeah We'll Be There During The Storm To See The Lad"!!! Wouldn't miss it for the World! I think that the only thing that could keep me away might be if the storm got to dangerous to keep my Son out in, but other than that.....We'll be there! Can't wait to see Caleb. I wish we could be at the town line to see him entering Wellfleet for the 1st time in 4 months. SO EXCITING!!! :)

See you tomorrow! :)

So excited for all the family and friends of Caleb Potter!!
I hope pictures are taken tonight at the hospital celebration and posted here.
It will probably be a while before we hear from you again Sharyn, the pictures would be a real treat.

Safe travels tomorrow!

Oh-I don't think I could adore you all anymore than I do already!
Of course hurricanes can't stop you, you've persevered through tougher battles than that!!
I do hope you enjoy your party tonight!!! (I feel sad for the staff at Spaulding-I can only imagine how much they'll miss you all!)
Phil from Amherst-soulfulness is a great word!
Kevin-how goes it on the lawn? :) Hope you and your tent are still standing when the revelry begins and joy returns to Wellfleet!

Wishing you all happy happy trails to home sweet home!!

Singing oh, it's enough to be on your way,
it's enough just to cover ground, it's enough to be moving on.
Home, build it behind your eyes, carry it in your heart, safe among your own.

Don't know why, but this JT song just popped into my head as I thought about the next leg of your journey.

Caleb and Noel - forces of nature, forces to be reckoned with. I'm sure Caleb will win out.

Sitting here reading your REALLY GREAT news on my couch. My 8 year old always looking over my shoulder.....we talked about Caleb coming home tomorrow....he said, "must be a happy day for him", just then Sponge Bob was coming on TV, so he changed the words and instead of "SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS" in the song he sang "CA LEB POT TER".....any of you that know the song give it a try, it has a nice ring to it!!!! Have a blast tomorrow! You are still in our daily prayers and will be for a LONG LONG time!

Right on Mumsie.. RAGE IT! It is actually kinda appropriate that YELLOWBEARD returns to a mighty storm.. ARGH! He has battled the biggest storms in his homeland, Fleet town.. and will conquer all now! I hope people don't manifest a ruff arrival for our Capt'n!! Think good thoughts, that along with Caleb's strong will to survive has gotten him back!!!

We'll be jaggin, and jiggin hard here, wish we could be there, but just knowing he will be nestled back into the Lyndsy/Potter compound is total relief! Chema & I will be heading North when he is rested & ready to go out on that double date him, Jennie, my love, and I..like we have talked about!

YARRRRRGY!!!! Love you Caleb.. BIENVENIDOS A CASA!!! YAHOOO!!! Xo... Clance/Toots!!

Call me Chicken, but do you seriously think it is a good idea, or good for Caleb, to be driving home from Boston, on the highway, with predicted 40 mile an hour sustained winds, and gusts up to 80 mph....and 3" inches of rain???? After all he has been through, and how hard he has fought to get to this point, is that really a good idea? What could it hurt to wait till AFTER the peak hours of this storm, or even Sunday? Power outages are another concern once he gets home. Comon now, I would think visitors at the house would be a whole lot LESS harmful to Caleb than to take this ride home at that hour. Like I said, call me Chicken, but I wish you would rethink this. But hey, dont let me rain on your parade. Sorry....just thinking of Caleb first.

To the vonLindsays, vonPotters and Captain Caleb, rejoice in your freedom tonight, enjoy your farewells to those who have held you in the palms of their hands and the depths of their hearts...
as greg greenway says in Free At Last-

"I remember the wind must blow,
and the river will have it's way,
And I will walk out of this cell one day-
Free At Last, Free At Last,
Shadows on this land will pass
Into the light, and in this life
I will be Free At Last...'

The wind will sure be blowin' for you all tomorrow as you enter your beloved Wellfleet. Safe travels, and take the long way home by the ocean drive, crack the windows and breathe deep the beautiful turbulent sea.

Caleb, you are, Free At Last!

Peace to all tonight,
Audrey

I prayed my heart for Caleb before, and it looks like Ill be praying for him again. Im praying that the people who love him will do whats best for him. Sunday is a better day, for everyone...PLEASE

Anonymous said...

Sharyn,

Please don't let anyone second guess you ... you've proven to be the fiercest mother going and I don't think for a minute that you'd do anything to jeopardize Caleb's well-being at this point. You follow your heart, know that you're in mine (and about a million others) and sail on through the storm if that's what your instincts tell you.

We'll be with you the whole way and I know that you'll feel it - travel safely, mumsie.

Love Love Love to you and yours,
Susan

P.S. -
Soulfulness ain't just a word - It's a COLOSSAL word and I plan to steal it from Phil and use it from now on whenever I refer to Wellfleet!

Sail on, Sharyn! We will be there whatever you decide!

Sharyn,
My name is Chris and I spoke to Zana today and she gave me this address. I'm trying to get in touch with you to help you out work related. Zana can fill you in with my phone numbers. Call me when you can. Hope all's well with you and Caleb tommorow and have a safe trip home.

To those "shy" about showing up without an invitation...Pirate up! What pirate needs an invite? I expect to make new friends and keep the old! You are all welcome in our little fleet town. No dress code, no invites required, or is that no dress required? It's hard to tell with Sharyn at the helm of this ship. In true Caleb fashion we will open our hearts & homes to all!
See you there!

Wish I could be there - thought I might be - I wish safe passage tomorrow and ENJOY every last second of this precious day which is almost upon you. You will adjust just fine and- from what I've read - you are going to have many people and much support which will continue after you've left your "main squeezes" at Spaulding. I have to believe that the heavens are smiling down on you - you are special people. ENJOY TOMORROW and good luck reacclimating (sp?) - you'll be fine.

Hi Sharyn,

"Bring your rubbers!" I'm just not going there tonight...

Just so you know I had the Wellfleet D.P.W. widen Main St. this week for your arrival tommorow... Also, the Police will be prohibiting traffic on Rt. 6 tommorow morning through 2PM from the Orleans rotary to Wellfleet Center to help facillitate your trip here! Last but not least I bought all the women's plus size clothing at Aim Thrift Shop for you to wear in Wellfleet until you lose all the fat you gained sitting in the Hospital..Hope this all helps...

Wellfleet and then some are waiting for you and Caleb's arrival... Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick...

Mr? Anonymous Jean Toots, Fleetians know to take all weather reports for the Outer Cape with a grain of salt. Plus for most of us, if we don't like the weather where are we going to go? See you on Town Hall lawn, it will be fun plus I heard a rumor there might be oysters.

Anonymous said...

As a very conservative Wellfleet resident I say, COME ON HOME!!! We always travel about town during hurricanes and love every minute of it. Storms do not worry us locals...they energize us! Fear not, just come on home!

Anonymous said...

Hurricane be damned ! Let the wind blow you straight home, let it erase all of these months of worry and pain, let it usher in a fabulous new day! I wish it could lift me from my cottage in the woods and fly me to the town lawn to sing out a thankful welcome for you. Happy happy happy for you!
As always with hope,

A good rain always wipes a clean slate and cleanses the soul..........I say bring on Noel and let's start this "new neginning" in a BIG way......the wind will be blowin' in from the ocean side ...just turn your noses over your right shoulders as you're driving down Route Six...crack the window.take a deep breath and you'll undoubtedly smell Mother Ocean and possibly get a wash of salt spray in your faces........WEEEOOHHHHH!!!
Can't wait for the town hall drive by..I'll be wearing my rubbers....I am having a bit of trouble getting the ribbed kind on my feet......
love you, Jodi

Anonymous said...

You did it! Not a dry eye on town hall lawn and it wasn't caused by the rain. thank you chuck, oysters for Caleb and for Peace - it's the same thing. Caleb, I will never ever forget the look on your face and your family's. I tried to capture it on my little video but I ran out of batteries. Oh well, my husband always says it's in the mind's eye anyway.
Welcome home all!
