On the fourth of July, 2007 Caleb Potter was involved in a skateboarding accident.
He suffered serious injuries and continues to need all of our positive thoughts and prayers.
This blog is to serve as a space for updates on Caleb's journey of recovery.

We were in a bar in some dark and dusty corner of Costa Rica the year Timmy traveled with us. Caleb and I sat across from one another in a booth and I commented on the aquarium above us with ribbons and signs all over it. Seems it held the champion crab - the kind which carries his house on his back . hermit perhaps? He apparently held the record for winning every race on the bar top each Saturday night for the prior 3 years pitted against other crabs and lots of drunken dollars at stake. I commented on how he could probably smell his home each time the bar doors swung open. The ocean was only a beer bottle throw away. He crawled back and forth, and back and forth through his cage, pacing his remembrance of the steps to the seashore and it was menacing to try to enjoy the evening without noticing his frustration. When we left I caught a glimpse of Caleb fumbling in his pocket with a slight smile of guilt and glee, and what should emerge from that pocket- but the winning crab! We ran to the shore and set him free. A more delightful moment, I cannot remember.
I want to thank you for being with me, for noticing the pacing, the discomfort, the trapped feelings, and the frustration. For you have single handedly lifted me out of my cage with your kind words, your thoughts, your prayers and your hopes, and you have walked me back home ...just because you paid attention.
Paying attention seems like such a small thing..but in the big picture, paying attention is larger than life. Simply noticing is an act of faith. It says " I believe that you may feel trapped now in your situation, and darkness threatens to swallow you, but something, or someone will come along, and you will be set free....and I believe you are capable of walking away with the darkness at your back, and that the place of comfort that each of us calls home will eventually be right in front of you with her doors wide open"

I have surgery tomorrow, so if I don't get back right away - just trust, as you always do... that we are fine." Oh yes - and did i mention that Caleb got his drivers license?

Way to go, Caleb! ... for your new driver's license, and for freeing the hermit crab!
Sharyn, I'll be thinking of you today; I'm sure we all will be.
Keep that positive energy flowing.
I trust it will be great to have your arm fixed and healing, soon.
Bless you! Heal well.

Sharyn, I am thinking about you and wishing you well in your surgery. How amazing that Caleb got his license. THAT gives me faith that while things may not be the same, they can continue to be great in a different set of surroundings. For you, Caleb and all of us who walk challenging roads at one time or another.

The economy will only afford us one summer week in Wellfleet this year although we will return in October for Columbus Day with some buds.

How can one get a coffee or a beer with you?

hi Sharyn- thanks for sharing that story- I love it! good luck with your surgery, I hope you're back at it in no time. Also, congrats to Caleb on getting his license- that's great. I always picture him sitting behind the wheel of his truck, so it feels like the natural order of things. Having a chance to talk with him and you last month meant a lot to me. I look forward to reading another post that says your arm is feeling like new- in the meantime, i'm sure you'll find a way to open that bottle of wine with one hand!

Best,
Neil

AWESOME news about Caleb's license! I know how significant an achievement that is. Caleb, congratulations! Just be careful now, OK? Of course you know how to drive, but you've been away from it for a while, so give yourself some time to get fully back into practice - no drag racing down suicide alley, OK?

Sharyn, good luck tomorrow - surgery is always a bummer, but everything will be fine.

I hope we get to see you guys soon. We're into the shoulder season now, in and out of town as time and other commitments allow. Meanwhile, take good care!

Hi Caleb & Sharyn!!
I keep meaning to ask you when i see you on Sundays about a boat ride. Jennie had talked to me about going out in the boat last summer and we never got to do it. And since Caleb loved Jamies speed boat, we would love to go out on the water with him sometime. You can come too if you'd like Sharyn!! I know how much he loves the water (or Caleb if you are reading this..i know how much you love the water and we always used to see you out there!!) So please let me know. I will be camping this weekend..so you can either write back to me on this or call me at 508-241-8754!!! much love!!

Caleb-
a HUGE CONGRATS to you on getting your license....made me smile BIG!!
Sharyn - I hope you are healing speedily and easily by he time you read this....
Life is moving along there....and well it seems.

I loved your crab story....and I love Caleb for setting him free....and both of you...for feeling the crab's frustration.....I do believe it takes a certain breed of human to stop and notice those things....and I do believe that many of us here....on your blog...would do the same...notice at least....I would like to think that with the help of a few drinks to boost my nerve...I too, would have set him free!!! I certainly would have at HIS age...as I think of it!!

Thanks for a great post!!

Sending tons of light and love-

Surgery! And Caleb got his drivers license! How nice it will be to see Caleb driving again. Sharyn you seem to have the resilient gene which is really the difference between people who give up and people who go on. Keep on truckin' Mama!

Sharyn,
I hope you are recovering quickly and comfortably.
I have been away on the beach visiting with friends in North Carolina, and had many opportunities to wear Caleb's sweatshirt (we had 2 nippy days and nights)and I had a couple of chances to speak of Caleb and his (and your) journey and how it has touched my life so profoundly. I thought of you all often, and have missed you! And every one here, too!
I am rambling after our 10 hour drive....feel better, my friend.
As always, with hope and love,
