July 20 - mumsie

My how time flies when your'e having fun! And fun we are having -- Caleb now has his music and does his jiggy dance in his mind -You all heard that Shaye and Kai came up and got the surfers salute which brought tears to their eyes. Also at the very end of his therapy session, his nurse wanted him to wake up a little and work for another 5 min. Caleb was giving her the "eye" which all of you know to be a very determined NO. She said -" Caleb - do you want to fight"? at which time he held up two fists and pretended to fight with her. He wrote 3 of the letters in his name and then fell asleep again -- he is coming back to us all! This is exhausting work - but his nurses are competant and won't let him get lazy. The cast of characters up here is hilarious - including Calebs room-mate's family from Fall Riva. Dad is a coke head I am certain, and mom just talks incessantly about nothing - mostly directed at me because hubby ignores her . Another guy walks the halls passing out pamplets on Hematoma which he has stolen from the front desk. Caleb and I are rolling our eyes! Kai and Shay met "Buster" - the vet in the wheelchair who I really believe does'nt need to be here - I think he believes he checked into a hotel.. I believe we landed on the psych ward. So each day Caleb has 3 sessions of therapy - Physical, Occupational and speech.. one hour in each. He has made incredible progress in so short a time. It is difficult at times to watch him stuggling with tasks so basic but I keep dipping his toes into the sand which Kai brought from LeCounts beach and I tell him all his friends are waiting there for him- waiting for him to come home. This seems to help him to concentrate and to work ever so much harder. I know how badly he will want to be in your company again and this will spur him onward. This coming Wed he will be transported back to Mass General so that his wires will come out - it is important to me that lots of you make it to the circle this week- I know you all have busy lives but I am asking this as a personal favor to Caleb - he needs extra prayers for this one - his eye will be repaired and I want that to go well. Caleb is doing fine and soon we are going to be raging the halls in helmets and wheelchairs right along side Buster rippin the place up and placing piraty Potter paraphnalia all over the place! I love you all - I cannot tell you how much these comments of yours mean to me and that your incredibly strong thoughts and words and prayers mean to Caleb Love, Mumsie

mumsie from Spalding re-hab

Caleb has settled in to his new home - in spite of the fear that the nursing staff would not be as competant as those at Mass General - once again - I am convinced that all of you out there drew in just what we needed the most - the best nurses one could possibly have and we scored the very best Doctor according to the head nurse. We will be happy here and in good hands. Caleb's day nurse is a hot ticket - a 45 or so yr. old woman from Ethiopia - I had barely been in the room - always a bit shaken when we have to change environments yet again- when she popped in took a look at Caleb, came within centimeters of my face and wagged her finger at me saying - "You be strong - I see allot a boys and dees boy - he gonna make it . I can always tell which boys are fighters- dees boy gonna make it" I could have cried but I didn't dare with Aster looking at me! I just love her and will work on getting her to wear my favorite shade of red lipstick -the only thing I can see that she is lacking! Another middle school story .. when Jan and I first separated and were just starting to do the trade off from house to house -Jan had weekends at that time. The boys would get back to me on Sunday eve just in time for baths and then off to bed. Caleb went off to school that Monday morning with a heavy heart and proceeded to once again get off the bus, ditch into the shrubs and began a long journey back home - only the temps were below feezing and he never let me send him with mittens or a hat. He told me later that he would see a police cruser and would hide where he could - he managed to get as far as the Eastham Sheraton when an unmarked car pulled over and took my nearly freezing child to the police station. By the time I walked through the doors he had charmed all of the police - they had all of their guns laid out on the table for him to examine, donuts and juice, and when they saw me they all stood up and insisted that I could not reprimand him - not one little bit- because when they asked him what he was doing walking in a blizzard he said " I just wanted to see my mom!" So now he gets to spend a lot of time with me finallyand he is already charming eveyone here. ! This place is really interesting to say the least-- we have Buddie, a vietnam vet who flies around in his wheelchair wearing a bike helmet , flirts with me and keeps trying to pull me into a late night poker game in his room. The guy across the hall who keeps yelling for his 6 pack and another who gets frustrated and makes cow noises - for those of you who thought I was a bit tweeked before - well just you wait--but this is truely Caleb's kind of place - when he improves he is just going to thrive in this atmosphere. More tubes are out - the IV , the catheter, the stiches he is looking morelike Caleb every day. He starts phisical therapy already and occupational as well - speech will begin next week - even tho his jaw is wired they will help him to strengthen that area with exercises. We are doing fine - love to all of you who are out there thinking of us - I saw the fence at the dump - Kai is here with my digital - Thank you - all of you. Love mumsie

Caleb on the move

Do any of you remember in Middle School when Caleb got mad at his teacher for pulling the buttons off his new shirt I had just given him? He ran outside and had teachers running after him all day and he would hide up in the trees and students would spot him and run to the windows to watch? He snuck through the bushes and got onto the bus at the end of the day like nothing happened! Well - Caleb is on the move today going across the block to Spalding Re- Hab at 11:oo am - so watch out your windows - I am certain you will see a rustle of a bush or a strek you just didn't catch out of the corner of your eye -He is strong today - the pneumonia is easing out of him and he stood up yesterday with help from the PT's. I am feeling very positive about this and have heard that things will and do move rapidly from here on out - perhaps you will be coming into town soon and Caleb will be waitng in ambush behind the cannon- water guns fully loaded and ready to attack!!! He will be there - don't you worry! I will keep you posted as soon as I can get my bearings - I am looking to buy a nurses outfit so I can mingle and get the real scoop- so Keep your mind on recovery - that is the mantra for the month! Love to all of you who take the time to hold uas in their thoughts - the comments on the blog are really what keeps me going in ways you could not understand - I fell like I am held in your hands while you are wearing kid gloves - the expensive ones from Italy ! Love ya Sharyn

mumsie again -

So for any of you how might worry still - I have great news - Caleb continues to communicate with me through a series of hand squeezes that we have worked out to mean yes- no - question/ answer so that I can help him to relax while he is not able to speak -- this must be very difficult for a kid who is ordinarily not quiet for one minute of the day. Today he is still and tells me he is in pain - he has not been heavily medicated in the past few days, so that even tho I don't like what he has to experience, I know that the bodies shock is waring off and he is coming back into reality. He has a great nurse who bonded with him and who pulled strings to get him into a private room - she and I hit it off as well - so she hangs out ( hides as she says) in his room - so he is now under surveillance more often than not. He has a Reiki master who just happened to be in Mass General who is healing his eye. Is it not amazing how powerful your prayers are? I have felt gifts every minute of the day - miracles all around me as I go through this with Caleb. I feel so confident that I have scheduled a manicure for 11: 00 am this morn and am happy to have pretty hands to rub his head with. He is fine, fine, fine. Now all of you have to do something for me this week - Caleb would not like to have an unhappy air about town so whoop it up this week - go extra crazy over this - do something out of the ordinary - stretch your limits! Give the cops something to worry about! This is how Caleb lives everyday - so smile - smile- smile! Doctors tell me that when his temperature goes down consistently to 98.6 they will be transferring him to Spalding Re-hab and the nurses tell me that this is when things happen fast!!! I am well and am happy to know how well Caleb is loved and cared for by all of you -- hugs and mucho kisses from mum.

Caleb update from Mass General

Caleb continues to do well - has a bit of pneumonia- but that is to be expected... I have to be brief because I am using the nurses computer just now - so --- continue the prayers we feel them so strongly. Caleb and I were able to communicate last eve. through hand squezzing and eye contact - he let me know that he is not on pain but that he is sometimes frightened and anxious. So pray for his calming abilities and for his lungs and continue focus on his left eye - I have a Reiki master coming in today to heal it along with all of you... What Caleb has taught me the most in life is that it is important to hug a little longer, squeese a little tighter and kiss a bit more meaningfully..also to listen with interest and compassion - have we not all felt that from Caleb? So today please give someone a bit more of your time, look them in the eye and tell them how you feel and let them know you are listening - and oh yes of course - drink a pint and slap someone on the backside to support this young man we all love dearly. He is out of surgical intensive and has moved to reg. intensive where all the young nurses are - do we doubt Caleb's power? He will be goung very soon to Spalding Re-hab -- God help them - they do not know yet what force is about to hit them. So - I'll update againg tomorrow -- Love to you all, Mumsie

Update from Mumsie!!

-When the Potter boys were little, the only stuffed animal that they managed to love, because they were to busy playing in the trees, was a little blue dragon, named Puff. When wound up, Puff playes the theme song from Puff the Magic Dragon. Several times I have tried to pitch Puff in the garbage can because he started looking like a big germ. The managed some how to always rescue him and now he is a permenant resident in Caleb's hospital room. Jennie wound him up, put him next to Caleb's head and asked him if he would kiss Puff.....and he did.
-Today, Caleb's drainage line from his spinal fluid will be removed, one less thing to annoy him. And the wires in his jaw will be removed not this wednesday but the following. Also on that day they will repair the bones around the left eye socket.
-We are trying to teach him to meditate when he gets aggravated....this will be a stretch for Caleb, but he lasted for a good 5 minutes before twitching anything. This is a great start.
-The family continues to thank you for all of the support, please send comments because that is what keeps me going.
--Ps:I got more kisses from Caleb today. He is such a sweetheart and I can not wait to see those bright blue eyes again!!!-jennie

Kisses!!!!

So, yes....i told everyone at the prayer circle the other night that I would give Caleb kisses for them, and I did. But the greatest thing is, he gave them back. I got kisses from him about 6 times today and it almost brought tears to my eyes. I just ask him if he wants a kiss and he smooches his lips together a couple times and gives me some... mauh mauh muah kisses. It's so sweet and gentle. I love him dearly and he is being so strong and I am so proud of him. I love you lebie..
